Croatan Sound connects Albemarle Sound to the north and Pamlico Sound to the south via a broad channel crossed by two sets of fixed bridges. The older, northernmost span has a vertical clearance of 45ft, and has LONG been the bane of sailors who must use the far more difficult Roanoke Sound – Old House channel to cruise south from the AICW/Albemarle Sound to Pamlico Sound, or the other way around. The southernmost twin Highway 64 bridges, where this maintenance will take place, feature 66ft of vertical clearance.

Mariners are advised to take caution and proceed slowly when approaching the construction site of the fender replacement on Bridge #9 across the Croatan Sound in Dare County on US64 Business, Old Mann’s Harbor Bridge. To help facilitate the repair of bridge fender system, on May 2, 2016 through August 15, 2016 during daylight hours. Two barges will be placed on Croatan Sound along with several small floats. The barges are approximately 30’x115′ and will be positioned to minimize, as much as possible, any disruption to the waterway. All construction equipment be
removed from the waterway channel at the end of the workday and properly lighted for storage each night. The onsite work supervisor can be contacted on VHF-FM channels 13 and 16 for communication. Mariners are urged to transit the area with caution at slow no wake speeds. Chart 12204 LNM 11/16
