This is by far the nicest marina I have ever had the pleasure of staying in. Ducked in because of hurricane Sandy, THEY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN NICER !!! CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. Starbucks coffee at Hilton, amazing showers, laundry, cable, WiFi, security, great staff, and to top it off, New Bern is a historic beauty. AAA+++

A little update. First of all, Mr. Sligh’s comments posted back in February are in reference to the Galley Store Marina, which is on the Neuse River, and is indeed exposed to that river’s weather. The New Bern Grand Marina, which this thread addresses, is on the TRENT river, and is very well protected from open water. It is also much larger than the Galley Store Marina. It is however, on the back side of the Cunningham draw bridge, which will open on request most of the time, otherwise on the hour. As for the laundry facility, there is only ONE washer and ONE dryer, and they are not free ($1 each at this writing.) Everything else I’ve read here is still accurate. The cruiser’s lounge is very small, and filled with furniture the hotel seems to not want. There is no TV or anything else of much use in it. Rates at the NBGM are still very attractive, but I hear rumor that it is headed for an increase soon.
We stayed at the New Bern Grand Marina for a month. (June – July 2012). Loved it! Clean facilities, staff very gracious and professional, rates reasonable. Great location to restaurants, shops, tourist attractions. Well done waterfront. Plan to return.

We docked at the New Bern Grand Marina today and went for a walk around town. The Galley store has a pretty good selection and their wine prices are very competitive. The staff inside are very friendly.
The downside (and there is a downside) is the open exposure to the wide Neuse River to the East. The wind was SW today when we visited and the two sailboats docked at the Galley Marina were bouncing around wildly. Note: This is in a SW breeze not uncommon in the summer. The problem is the chop that builds on the river cannot be contained by one width of floating docks. This would be a great spot on a calm night.

We stay at this marina every spring on our way north, usually for a month, and are headed there in two weeks. Called a good friend who is a longtime liveaboard there, and he confirmed that the marina has changed hands, but says he hasn’t noticed much change. We look forward to going back.

The negative comments above are from a man having a bad day for some reason. We keep a boat at New Bern Grand and we couldn’t be more pleased. The staff is helpful and courteous, the docks and grounds in top shape, the atmosphere and neighbors friendly and pleasant. We get a weekly email of news, status, reminders, and are kept informed of all events.
New Bern Grand is in the middle of downtown New Bern and is convenient to everything. The unhappy boater is right in one thing, there are now two separate business entities. It’s been transparent to the slip holders thus far.
One other thing, though New Bern experienced a 9-foot water surge with Hurricane Irene and it’s streets were under 2 feet of water, the marina and residents suffered no real damage.

These comments are contrary to everything I have experienced at the New Bern Grand Marina. The marina is neat and clean. The staff is great, always going the extra mile to insure those of us who actually have boats there are happy and comfortable.

The marina and hotel are now two seperate amenities. NO SECURITY at night. The grounds are littered and it looks like a third rate glorified lawn mowing company has tried to landscape..the dayno I visited they blew there lawn clippings and leaves in the water for your boat pumps to get stopped up. This marina is not what it was when I visited two years ago..we are very disappointed and will not be staying there
Called there in March 2010 about long term slips. Many amenities (A fitness center, New Bern, hotel, restaurants). Competitive rates for what you get, but was also told they had dropped their rates in the past year because they were losing (long term) boaters due to the economy. Very tempting but too far away from the ocean for us. I love this marina, it’s always in top shape.
We lived in the condos that overlook the marina for eight months in 2009 while our boat was being renovated.
For a great walk, turn right at the end of the docks toward the new bridge. The sidewalk takes you around the convention center where you turn right into a waterfront park. Staying close to the water takes you into an eight square block historical residential area that includes the local library and a solid magazine collection.
There are two great, local coffee shops. One is three blocks away on Middle Street, which dead ends into the marina and one two blocks away on Craven, which also dead ends into the marina. Two restaurants we liked are Captain Ratty’s, one block away on Middle and the Chelsea, three blocks away at Middle and Broad.
The big box stores, such as Wallmart and Lowes, as well as the West Marine store and Harris Teeter, are about a ten minute car trip in the same directioin.
If you need a Captain to move your boat or for a day’s instruction, I highly recommend John Watson who lives a block away and has a boat in the marina (252-626-2280).
If you need boat repair of any kind, the guy to call is Danny Swindell. He works at Hatteras and, if he can’t help you, he knows everyone who is good in the area who can. (252-229-4806)
I believe the best boat painter on the east coast is Bruce Mallard who lives in the area and can be reached at 252-670-8255.
If I had been staying in the part of the marina that is directly off of the deck of the hotel, I would not have been a fan of the music that plays each weekend night during the summer until 10 p.m.. It is loud and the crowd can be noisy.
The Hilton has taken over the management of this facility. Chuck, the marina manager, and Nancy, his aide de camp, are the best. I liked it so much I am staying here for the month of August, or most of it. I’ve had mail and package delivery here, no problem. The hotel restaurant offers excellent food at reasonable prices, and there is live music and dancing on the deck Friday, Saturday and Sunday (jazz on Sunday!) evenings, 5 – 9, weather permitting, during the summer. This is where the locals come to party! If you have a sweet tooth or love a unique breakfast, try the Bakers Square, just two blocks away on Middle Street. Their French Toast with buttery syrup is to die for, their cookies are yummy, but their pies can be brought back and enjoyed on board! I opted for the chocolate pie for $7.95 If you can get a courtesy ride to the Harris Teeter on S. Glenburnie, you can buy lunch or dinner already cooked at their deli, and they offer take out at the salad bar, too.
New Bern is up the the Neuse River from Oriental…about 2.5 hours. The best location to stay is the Sheraton Marina – (252) 638-3585 or 252.514.2574, or 866.759.4220; New Bern is a 2 night, 1 day stay…lots of small restaurants and old houses within walking distance… historic … http://www.newberngrandmarina.com/

Message: The parent company that has the marina as well as the Sheraton Hotel has just completed a major renovation of the entire property including the Boaters’ Showers and Laundry. The Laundry now has (2) Washers/Dryers which are FREE. There are (3) showers in both the Men and Ladies areas which have new tile and fixtures plus large basins and super size mirrors. A nice touch is the hopper with clean bath mats.
Note that visitors to the marina are considered guests of the hotel and. therefore, can use the Fitness Center which is located in the same building which has the Dock Master’s office the Showers and Laundry.

Message: I forgot to mention when passing on info about the renovated marina facilities and boaters’ amenities that the Sheraton Hotel also offers a shuttle service that can be used for shopping, going to West Marine or to visit some of the many historic sites.
