The Problem: Hell Gate was dredged during the summer of 2009, and for a time all was well. HOWEVER, reports starting in May, 2009 and running through January of 2013, indicate that shoaling has reappeared here, particularly along the edges of the channel. One reports places depths near marker #87 as little as 4 1/2 feet, but most report MLW soundings of around 5 feet, as of January, 2013. Undoubtedly, without dredging, things will continue to deteriorate as time progresses!
