Yesterday (Sunday, 3/3/13), a frightening story surfaced about a 50 foot Hatteras yacht that was apparently run down by some sort of large, commercial vessel, in the open sea, off the St. Johns River and Mayport Florida. Here are two links that make for sober reading!

Later details have emerged, as of 3/7/13, in a “Florida Times Union” story, including the possible identity of the Captain, and how many people were aboard the doomed vessel. Unfortunately, you must be an “All Access Member” to read the full story.
Summarizing what I learned by a copy of this account sent to the SSECN by a fellow cruiser, it is now confirmed that there were at least two other Venezuelan men aboard, and possible an American captain. “Friends” of the one person whose body was recovered have contacted the newspaper, and related there may have been as many as five people aboard. The vessel was believed to have been traveling to Aruba.
