    • [EXPIRED] IMMEDIATE Input Requested on Day Dock Placement, Beaufort, SC, AICW Statute Mile 536.5

Your immediate attention is needed for input on the location of a new day dock on the Beaufort waterfront. Please respond to Lauren Kelly at lkelly@cityofbeaufort.org by Monday, July 27th. Our thanks to Brad Pickel and the Altlantic Intracoastal Waterway Association for their efforts on cruisers’ behalf.
The Beaufort area, one of Waterway cruisers’ favorite stopping points, is home to SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSORS, Downtown Marina in downtown Beaufort.

      Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
I spoke today with Lauren Kelly, Planner for Beaufort, SC, and we discussed the fact that Beaufort, SC was looking at building a new day dock along the seawall in the downtown area. Specifically, they are evaluating two locations shown on the attached PDF. I asked her if she would like additional input and offered to forward it to SSECN, AGLCA and Waterway Guide for distribution. She said yes, but she needs comments ASAP as it will be on their Council agenda next week.aiwa
They are not looking for design input at this time, but are looking for location input. Location 1 is in a place that requires frequent maintenance to the existing bulkhead/seawall so it could be encumbered by construction when repairs are being mads. Also, the cruise ship currently docks in this area when it is in town. The second option is closer to the restaurants, shops, etc. If you could forward this information to your contacts and ask them to contact Lauren with any input by Monday [July 27], I know that she would be appreciative. She is copied on this email and her information is below.
      Thank you,
      Brad

      Brad,
Here’s the hydrographic survey with the day dock locations overlaid on it.
The day dock will be 200′ long, with an 80′ ramp. The inside area (closest to the wall) will be for smaller boats. The outside area will be for boats 26′ and longer.
My question is whether or not you see any difference in where the day dock is placed: adjacent to the marina, or on the other side of the park. The eastern side of the park has a public restroom and is more centrally located to the restaurants and shops. The marina side on the west is adjacent to the parking area.
      Thanks,
      Lauren W. Kelly

We like location 2 – the easternmost location closest to the shops etc. It sounds like the new proposed dock will be longer which is much needed – hopefully it will be placed far enough out from the shoreline so the “inside” dockage will not be as shallow as is the current situation. We thank you for making these much needed improvements!

So the question is: will the existing Day Dock remain at the west side of the Marina for the cruisers who are moored in the anchorage on the west side of the Beaufort Marina? IF not, then the western location is preferred. IF so, then placing the Day Dock nearer the shops will be better for day boaters visiting Beaufort’s waterfront.
