[EXPIRED] Floating “Big Black Drums” Navigational Hazard in Hawk Channel, Offshore from Marathon, Reported in the Florida Keys
Looks like the Florida Keys are not having a good “navigational week” with the report earlier today of the sagging utility lines over the approach to Marathon’s Boot Key Harbor. Now, here comes another article detailing a navigational problem from our very special Florida Keys correspondent, Captain Charmaine Smith Ladd. The “big black drums” in question (see below), seem to lie on the Hawk Channel, south of Moser Channel (immediately west of Marathon). If you are operating your vessel on Hawk Channel between Marathon and Key West, WATCH OUT FOR THESE HAZARDS!
Just heard the CG put out a Notice to Mariners regarding 25 big black drums floating in the waters 3 miles S of the Seven Mile Bridge. Not sure of the coordinates but wanted to get this to you right away. For those Bahamas bound or returning it could be a problem. The Sombrero Lighthouse is 5 miles out, meaning the drums are floating inside the reef area. Quite unusual. Also a hazard to anyone traversing the waters. No one would expect such a thing inside the reef.
