    • Good Vertical Clearance Found at Three Mile/I-295 Bridge, St. Johns River, Jacksonville, FL

The Three Mile/I-295 Bridge crosses the St. Johns south of Beauclerc Bluff and unlighted daybeacon #9 and south of the Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

On Friday, passed through the three-mile-295 bridge (aka the Buckman Bridge) with inches to spare at height of 67′ at almost low tide. The gauge read 66+. The tide range up there is only about 2-3 feet.
I think the report of 63 feet in the listing of the bridge must have been at a Spring Tide high water mark. Because of the report we went through at a COG of about 1/4 knot, against a still vigorous tidal current, expecting to tickle the lower beams of the bridge with our VHF antenna and hoping for nothing worse. Never touched!

A great little marina! Kathy and Jay were very helpful with docking and offered suggestions when our AC was out. Showers clean. Easy in and easy out for our 37ft O’Day. They also have a DIY yard and a closed lift should you need a haul out.

    • Good Visit at Ortega Landing Marina, Ortega River, Jacksonville, FL

Another fine review of Ortega Landing Marina, located along the northwestern banks of the Ortega River.

We just finished spending a very pleasant two weeks at Ortega Landing Marina. Located on the Ortega River just a few miles south of downtown Jacksonville, OLM is a first class facility with great amenities and a thoroughly competent staff. The night we arrived we were dealing with an outgoing tide and a 30MPH wind. Dockmaster Bruce had three people waiting on the dock to help us back BUFFALO GAL into our slip. Every time a boat arrived during our stay we saw at least one and often more marina staff on hand to asssit in docking and departure.
Docks are all wide concrete floating, gated, with multiple 50A and 30A hook-ups and pump-out facilities at each. Pump-outs are done every Thursday, other days by prior arrangement, and are free. There is a nice pool and common area with gas grills, a captain’s lounge, excellent laundry facilities and a nice area close by for dog walking and excercise. A large shopping area with a major grocery store, large department store, a variety of specialty shops including Starbuck’s and a West Marine is a ten minute walk. If you need maintenance work performed, there is a person in residence who can arrange that for you. Major repairs can be completed at either Lamb’s Yacht Center or the Huckins factory a half mile down river. Downtown Jacksonville is about a $20 cab ride.
Ortega Landing’s daily, weekly and monthly rates are very competitive. They also have discounts for “Loopers”, as well as other cruiser organizations. We would highly recommend OLM to any cruiser passing through Jacksonville. We would also recommend calling ahead for directions into the Ortega River from the St. Johns River, as there are several shoals that can be easily avoided with the proper local advice.

    • Good Times at Ortega Landing Marina – Jacksonville, FL

What a great review of Ortega Landing Marina. Also, notice the quick, complimentary word about SSECN SPONSOR, Lambs Yacht Service.

When you are cruising in the Jacksonville, Fl area, if you want to spend a few days exploring the area or relaxing after your run up the AICW from the Keys, we would highly recommend Ortega Landing Serving the North Florida area for over 50 years, we welcome you. We are in the process of updating this site. If you need help with your question or additional information, feel free to email us atMarina. This is a first class facility with excellent floating docks, great power, a beautiful pool and recreation area. There is a major shopping center with department store, large Publix grocery and several restaurants located about a ten minute walk away. Located on the Ortega River just south of downtown Jacksonville, it provides good storm protection. Tidal current can require care docking, but dockmaster Kris and his staff provide 24 hour docking assistance. The daily transient rate is $1.75/ft INCLUDING 50A power, making it a very attractive value for a marina of this quality.
We have just spent a very fun weekend here on our 54 Hatteras. If you just want to spend a day or two in Jacksonville or have maintenence/repairs to be done, then Lamb’s Yacht Center, an AGLCA sponsor is the best place go. If you want a really nice place to spend a few days or longer with all the nice amenities, Ortega Landing Marina is, in our opinion, the best spot in the area.
We have no affiliation with OLM. We just like to pass along the really nice places we have found, particularly those that exceed expectations.

    • Praise for The Marina at Ortega Landing (St. Johns River – Ortega River, Jacksonville, FL)

After entering Ortega River, which itself is found upriver from downtown Jacksonville, the Marina at Ortega Landing will be the first facility that will come abeam to the northwest.
We just visited here ourselves in June of 2011, and were very impressed with the squeaky clean showers. laundromat, great swimming pool and beautifully manicured grounds!

For a well protected marina in Jacksonville, Florida you should look at Ortega Landing Marina. It’s located in a well protected cove with no fast moving boats. The marina has nice, new floating docks, a pool, laundry and is within walking distance to all the shopping you’d need. They also have great monthly rates, at least when we stayed their 1 1/2 years ago.

    • A Visit to Jacksonville Landing on the St. Johns River, Jacksonville, FL

The Jacksonville waterfront is 13 miles off the AICW on the St. Johns River and Jacksonville Landing is a downtown shopping mall/food court with a stage area for special events and concerts. The city marina Wade mentions is the Metropolitan Park Marina located northwest of St. Johns River flashing red marker #82.

This morning the tides/current were in our favor, so Shady Lady cruised about 19 miles up the St. Johns River to Jacksonville, stopping at the “free” dock downtown at Jacksonville Landing. As we approached we smelled coffee, then saw the Maxwell House factory near the river. “Free,” I say? Well, we walked around for a good part of the day, and at
5pm the monthly art festival and fashion show began. Many establishments feature the work of local artists, and some offer wine and snacks as well. The fashion show was kind of tacky, but the art displays got better after the 3rd glass of wine. Unfortunately for me we then went into a jewelry store to look at the art displayed there. Susie saw a necklace she “loved,” and the “free” dock suddenly became kind of pricey. One of our walks today took us down to the football stadium, where there is a city-run marina. If you have bikes on board, or like to walk, it’s a great deal! Free floating docks, free pump-out and free water. If you want electricity, there’s a kiosk that accepts your credit card and you purchase (for around $8 for 24 hours) electric power. The place was absolutely empty. Of course, there’s a charge if an event is going on.
Back to Jacksonville Landing. The sign says rafting up to 5 deep can be required. There are only 3 other boats tonight, though, with plenty of empty dock space. The potty/manatee police also came by; very friendly and informative, but he carried a bottle of blue dye to test your holding tank if he became suspicious.
The plan for tomorrow is to continue cruising up the river for a few hours, then turn back and dock for the night by the stadium.

    • Don’t Dare Miss a Cruise of the St. Johns River

I could not agree with Captains Flint and Lelie any more if I tried. A cruise of the beautiful St. Johns River is really the best that the eastern shores of the Sunshine State, north of Miami, has to offer. And, if you are one of those cruisers like ourselves, who really enjoys throwing out the hook about as far removed from civilization as you are likely to get this day and time, then the St. Johns south of Palatka is nothing short of cruising paradise!

We would encourage all [cruisers] who are heading up the East Coast of Florida to include the St. Johns River in their travels. We have just completed the cruise from Jacksonville to Sanford and back and have enjoyed it very much. The scenery is beautiful and the wildlife abundant. We are not dinghy explorers, but we enjoyed all the little towns along the way. If you do love exploring little creeks with your dinghy, you will have a wonderful time on the river. Don’t miss it!!
Flint and Leslie Firestone aboard Grace Full at the Outback Crab Shack on Six Mile Creek

We just finished a week on the St Johns, started at Outback Crabshack to Hontoon Island, 04 APR through 10 APR. Stayed at Hontoon Island State Park ($20.00 a night with 30 AMP power, water and excellent facilities!!!)
Outstanding time with one exception; We anchored one evening at the Croaker Hole in Little Lake George.
After dinner, at sunset there was a huge swarming of blind mosquitoes. It completely covered our bimini and flybridge and sundeck area (we estimate over 2.5 million after measuring the bugs and the bimini area) They don’t bite, they just make noise and a mess. We noticed that they stayed away from the open areas of our boat, the bugs seemed to prefer being in covered/closed in areas. The slightest breeze sent them away from our foredeck and top of the sundeck. Little Lake George was the only place we experienced these annoyances, we did not notice any near Hontoon Island.
Take the trip South of Palatka! Totally worth it.

Fleming Island Marina is on the southern shore of Doctors Inlet, southwest of St. Johns River daybeacon #11.

Fleming Island Marina (on the St. Johns S. of Jacksonville) where we bought the boat was a good one as well, though it can get rolly if on the outside piers in a blow (the St. Johns is very wide at this point.) Probably won’t fit as it is cold in the winter. They had a pool, etc.

This marina has a nice tee dock and a few slips for transients. The folks are friendly, the bathrooms and showers are old, but well maintained and clean. There is an old but serviceable washer and dryer on site. The dock is a few blocks from downtown and a 15 minute bike ride from the very impressive Ravine Gardens State Park. • A Visit to Seafarers Marina off the Trout River/St. Johns River in Jacksonville, FL

Seafarer Marina is located on the southwesterly shores of Trout River just a hop, skip and a jump from downtown Jacksonville.

Subject: Seafarers Marina, Trout River 11/25/10
While the staff was friendly and our boat was not touched for 5 days when we drove home and back this marina leaves a lot to be desired. It is a low cost marina. However the fixed wooden docks are in terrible disrepair and in my opinion very dangerous. Most of the slips are occupied by live aboard folks and or project boats. Many are in very bad shape and look as though they are not seaworthy. With a 3 foot tide that seems to channel rapidly through the docks it is often a challenge to board your own boat. The bathroom was out of service.

    • Cruising Description of the St. Johns River

Captain Donovan gives us an excellent description of this beautiful river that flows north from central Florida and then east from Jacksonville.

The St. Johns is a bit of a trip off the ICW, but worth it. You can anchor in several places downstream of Jacksonville, which may be necessary depending on how far you are going the first day and because there is a lot of current in the river at times. In Jacksonville proper, Jacksonville Landing dock downtown on the LDB (north bank) is fun, because it is free and there are several bars and restaurants within a few hundred feet/yards. It can get a little noisy from bands on weekends, but it is all free. We happened to get lucky and go to the Metro Diner for Sunday breakfast. This is a truly classic neighborhood restaurant. We were super lucky to find it, and you will do well to go there, even if you have to use a taxi.
A little further upstream, under the sometimes problematical railroad bridge, you will get to the Ortega River and the excellent marinas and yards there. It can be shallow, so if you have a deep draft, go slowly. One low drawbridge and you are there.
Then, go upstream to Six Mile Creek. Feel your way in to the 1000 foot long dock in front of the Outback Crab Shack restaurant. The restaurant is a happening in itself, and if you eat there, the dock is free (no water or electric). Very nice dock, and they never checked to see if we were boaters or if we were docked there. Take the dinghy all the way up the creek for some fun nature viewing.
If you need a marina by now, check out Palatka. It is about the biggest city until you get to Sanford. Several marinas are here, although we didn’t stay in any. Instead, we continued upstream to Murphy Creek, a delightful anchorage in a winding `creek.’ Murphy Creek can be busy with fishermen and small watercraft on weekends, so try to hit it on a weekday. A giant alligator we called “Albert” can be seen sometimes sunning himself on a fallen tree on the bank. It is a deep creek, and good anchoring. There are many, many anchorages and not many marinas until you get past Lake George and toward Astor. Nothing great there either. Anchoring is the way to go.
There is then a free dock at Welaka, FL that is home to very little except for a marvelous maritime museum, the love of a man named Robert Speas, who is the museum curator and jack-of-all-trades. Meet him.
A bit further you come to Huntoon Island State Park. Near the north end are several marinas, a few anchorages, great sightseeing, dinghying, and even swimming. Check it all out. It is worth a stop for at least the day. As usual, this place gets very busy on weekends in the winter.
Then is Lake Monroe, Sanford, and the Monroe Harbor Marina. This is an excellent marina. It is close to town and several restaurants, is full service and even has a courtesy vehicle. Nice folks. Lots of snowbirds stay here for the winter months. It is also close to Orlando, if you are interested in that.
Then, you reverse your steps and check out the places you missed. Overall, an excellent side trip off the usual beaten path of the ICW.
I am sorry for the long post, but folks seemed to be asking’¦

The St. Johns River, the only river in the northern hemisphere that flows north, departs the AICW at Sisters Creek and terminates in central Florida at Sanford.

Anyone heading up the St. Johns River (Florida) may want to check our blog at: http://sanderling2010.blogspot.com/ which is a log of our trip to Sanford and back in May/June 2010. • Praise for Huckins Boat Yard, Jacksonville, Fl, off the AICW

Huckins Boat Yard lies along the northern shores of the mouth of the Ortega River, just upstream of the Roosevelt Boulevard Bridge.

I wanted to share with the group what a great experience I had with the Huckins Boat Yard up the Ortega River here in Jacksonville, FL! The staff & management were easy to work with, the price was guaranteed, and everybody went out of their way to help you when you needed something! After calling many boat yards between Jacksonville & Port Canaveral about getting our bottom painted we found that Huckins was between 30% & 45% less expensive than any other marina we called. For boats under 44′ the flat price is $27 per foot, for boats 45 to 50 feet the price is $30 per foot. For that price you get:
      * To live aboard your boat while they do the bottom job at no additional charge, must have holding tank
      * Price includes: haul out, power wash, blocking, sanding, painting, put in. The price even includes shaft-zincs!
      * We were hauled on Tuesday morning and were ready to be back in the water on Friday
      * They have scaffolding & planks if you want to wax your boat while on the hard
      * Courtesy Car
      * Publix, West Marine, CVS, and Restaurants all within an easy walk
This is not a marine with all the bells & whistles, it’s a working boat yard that does quality work. They have a great parts department. woodworking shop, paint & fiberglass team, and engine mechanics. I have no interest in the company but highly recommend them to fellow boaters! It was easily worth our time & money to cruise the extra 22 miles up the St John’s River, and enjoy the free dock at the City Landing for a few days before getting hauled! City of Jacksonville Metropolitan Park is 13 miles off the AICW and northwest of St. Johns River flashing red marker #82.

This has gotta be the best kept secret in NE FL! As many times as we’ve been through Jax, we’ve never stopped here. The concrete floating docks are new, excellently constructed, and sporting healthy-size cleats. There is great wind protection inside the breakwater. For a mere $8/day, slips are available with water and 50 amp power. The only caveat is a limitation of 72 hour visit. Adjacent to the ramps leading to the docks is a lovely park with playground equipment, picnic tables and grills. Nice restrooms are conveniently placed. Showers nor laundry facilities are available on site. We’re walking distance to Winn-Dixie, Jacksonville Landing (which seems to be resurrecting), the Florida Theater, an icon and venue for live performances, and The Times Union Center for the Performing Arts. The Museum of Science and History is just across the Main Street Bridge at Jax Landing. We’re here to begin the St. John’s River Cruise today with the Palm Coast MTOA-ers and are certainly anticipating that, but discovering

Metropolitan Park Marina and Jacksonville Landing are two free landings located 13 miles off the AICW on the St. Johns River, northwest of Flashing Red Marker # 82. On and off over the years, overnight dockage has not been allowed at Jax Landing, then at other times it was OK. Looks like, at least for the moment, overnight dockage here is OK.

Yes this {Metropolitan Park Marina} is a great spot to stay, but just 500 yds. farther, you can stay free. The caveat is that there is no electricity. The Landing is right down town. That’s RIGHT, right down town. There is some noise associated with the activities, but a nice spot all the same. • Good Times at Marina at Ortega Landing (Jacksonville, FL, off the St. Johns River)

The Marina at Ortega Landing is the first facility you will encounter upon entering Ortega River. This stream will be found off the St. Johns River, just upstream of downtown Jacksonville.
Ortega Landing Marina is associated with a large condo project, and a shopping center is found just behind the complex.

We are sitting at the Jacksonville Airport as I write this while awaiting a flight back to Colorado and we have our boat at the Ortega Landing Marina and we were very happy with the service and the marina after we arrived earlier this week from Charleston, SC.
The location is great close to a large mall and West Marine. Enterprise even picked us up at the marina and they are located within a 5 minute drive.
The dockage was $9.00 per foot per month but the marina was getting full, the pool is still heated and the hot tub and the free new and washer dryer facilities were great. They even have loaner bikes with pannier bags as well to hold groceries or other items such as from shopping.
We met another couple who are leaving their boat there until February who have 1/2 looped and had a great meal out with them.
If looking for a short or long term stay don’t pass by this great facility its safe and well protected just follow the markers in as there are shallow areas outside of the channel as there is everywhere.
Just give Amy a call she is very helpful.
