Important – Captain Charmaine Tells How to Correctly Navigate Through The Channel 5 Bridge (Florida Keys)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 04-29-2011

Channel 5 is ,arguably the most important of the Inside Route to Hawk Channel, or the other way around, passages in the Florida Keys, north and east of Marathon and Moser Channel. And, Captain Charmaine has found a real possibility of dangerous navigational error in these well traveled waters. ALL Florida Keys cruisers need to read the article below CAREFULLY!!
We would very much like to hear about your Channel 5 cruising experiences. Have you had a similar/dissimilar experience from Captain Charmaine. Please click the “Comment on This Posting/Marina/Anchorage/Bridge” link below, and share your information.

April 29th 2011
“Channel 5 Bridge Passage – Chart 11449 Recommended Route in Error”
24 50.281 N, 80 46.401 W
by Charmaine Smith Ladd

The Channel 5 bridge spans between Long Key and Lower Matacumbe Key. It has a fendered underpass for vessels needing clearance (65′). Being the first opportunity for boats coming down to the Keys from the West coast of Florida to cross over from Florida Bay into the Atlantic, Channel 5 is understandably heavily traversed. For those desiring a calm anchorage while traveling the Atlantic to those wanting to explore the backwaters of Florida Bay, crossing via the Channel 5 bridge underpass has its reward of a calm night in the shallower waters of Florida Bay and does not disappoint with its access to the serenity and beauty of its backwaters.
September Sea and her crew have used Channel 5 for such purposes for nearly a decade. From the first time, it became apparent that the bridge underpass was marked incorrectly on my paper chart (#11449). There is a recommended route on that chart that is in error. The recommended route takes you between the wrong bridge pilings and dangerously close to a massive utility pole piling. I made note of it directly on my chart and drew a line to show the actual route.
The next time we passed through Channel 5, we had a chartplotter and had plotted a course based on the recommended route of the vector charts in the chartplotter. Of course the vector charts had propagated the same error, and we once again had to adjust our course to pass between the correct fendered bridge pilings. This is when the reality of the true danger became much more apparent. Charting a course based on an erred recommended route could find one in a very confusing situation, especially in foul weather or at night. The intersection of the black tracks in the photo below show where to properly cross (24 50.281 N, 80 46.401 W).
Each time we’ve come here, it never fails that we observe other boats attempting to follow the recommended route of the chart. Just the other day, s/v Restless (shown above) was spotted on the wrong course to cross beneath Channel 5 from the Atlantic, while September Sea (also shown) was on the correct course.

I tried to hail the vessel on Channel 16 but the couple in the cockpit either could not hear me or did not have the VHF turned on. Their vessel continued and just as I thought the Captain would try to pass beneath between the wrong bridge pilings, the realization of a huge utility pole piling staring back at him from the other side proved to quickly change his mind. The vessel turned hard to port. That was when the fenders lining the proper bridge underpass were noticed by its Captain. I am sure the vessel’s Captain then noticed that the boat behind him (we aboard September Sea) were on the proper course.
This is a dangerous situation. The huge concrete pilings (foundations for communication cables) run parallel to the bridge on Bay side and do not give a boat much room to maneuver if the bridge is crossed anywhere but at the proper fendered opening. Those pilings are very difficult to notice from the Atlantic side.
Yesterday, checking online with NOAA’s most recent charts, I saw the error still exists (see photo below). I’ve added a red dot on the NOAA chart to indicate where the proper crossing is actually located.

I have learned from this that navigational chart changes do not take place unless we as cruisers report potentially dangerous errors when we see them. In the meantime, please make note on your current chart (#11449) and manually update any pertinent routes in your chartplotter.
Cruisers helping cruisers, it’s what we’re all about!

Question for Captain Charmaine:
Is water always deeper in the middle of a channel when crossing? And when approaching a bridge to cross, how far in advance do you choose which pilars or opening to go thro? Maybe questions a rookie sail person might ask like me. Thank You
Skipper Burr Bault

Captain Charmaine replies:

Thanks so much for taking the time to read my article, Burr. Local knowledge is often handy when navigating channels. Over time, areas of a channel can be silted in (due to hurricanes, usually) and not have the minimum depth as shown on charts. So the answer to whether or not the middle of a channel is always where the deepest waters are is: not always. Most of the time, especially in wide channels, you will find deeper water in the middle. The narrower the channel, the more local knowledge one should seek.
On the charts, the opening beneath bridge spans for boats needing height clearance is well indicated. At that area, in most cases, boats with a mast height of up to 65′ can clear safely. In the case of Channel 5, I believe that the chart is still showing where a drawbridge of the old bridge span opened and allowed boats to pass through. When the new elevated bridge span was built, it was done so that boats could pass beneath without the need of a drawbridge and bridge tender to raise it. Therefore, the recommended route for Channel 5 shown on the charts is outdated, as it is in line with a drawbridge which no longer exists.
At Channel 5, the placement of the new fendered opening for vessels is on the opposite end of where the old drawbridge used to be. Pilings are shown incorrectly. It is therefore very important to pass through where height clearance is optimal and the opening is clear of obstructions. Such areas are well marked on the charts and usually correct. However, in this particular case the recommended route is in error because it has not been updated since the new bridge span was built.
Hope this helps!! Hugs!
Charmaine

Very informative article. Your knowledge of the 5 Channel Bridge, of the Florida Keys, is awesome!
Linda Honore-Pitts

I have read many of your articles and appreciate your advice and warnings. My husband and I are bringing our s/v, draft 4’8″ from Tampa Bay to Ft. Lauderdale the last week in November. What passage would you recommend from Marathon to Miami? We have limited sailing experience on the Atlantic but we like the greater depths. We do like to anchor and are not overly excited about visitng any towns or marinas unless necessary. And as always we are under some time constraints. Thank you for any suggestions!

Cowpens Northeastern Anchorage (Florida Keys Inside Route near St. M. 1154.5)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 04-25-2011

Wouldn’t want to get caught here in fresh western or southwestern winds, but otherwise, this spot makes for a good Florida Keys place to drop the hook!

Great little site, well protected from the south & east. Founder’s Park has a full marina with fuel, ice, and pump out station. There is a nice beach, tennis courts, pool, fields, amphitheater, and even a dog park.

Whale Harbor Channel – Wilson Key Anchorage (near Statute Mile 1156.5)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 03-25-2011

The anchorage described below lies off the eastern half of the Whale Harbor Channel, and is entered from the Florida Keys Inside/ICW route. We have always found the swing room here to be limited, but clearly Captain Erwan did not suffer from this problem.

Very nice anchorage, quiet compared to the one on the other side of the Wilson Key. The bottom is very soft mud, so not very good in strong wind. Don’t go too far inside the bay, it becomes shallow very fast.
We anchored there to visit the “Theater of the Sea”. It’s at a walking distance from the shore where it’s easy to dinghy. Ice, small grocery and Tiki bar very close.

Lignumvitae Key Mooring Field (near Statute Mile 1162.5)

Clearly, the state of Florida is not keeping up with this mooring field. In the absence of more than one mooring, you can still choose to drop the hook here.

Spent one night there on March 13. I found only 1 mooring ball.

Matecumbe Harbor Anchorage (Florida Keys Inside Route, near St. M. 1168)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 03-25-2011

Click the chartlet below, which will open a Chart View page centered on this anchorage. Now, even though they are not noted on the chart, be aware that high-tension powerlines cross the southern reaches of Matecumbe Harbor. Captain Erwan can certainly anchor here if he likes, but, for me, I would be sleepless the entire night anchored on these waters in a sailcraft, worrying about dragging into these deadly obstructions.

I’m not [in agreement] with the “powercraft ONLY”. I have a 31ft sailboat and we spent one night in its beautiful anchorage. There is enough room and depth to stay away from the power lines. The bottom is hard mud which hold very well.
You can go ashore using the dinghy and the channel 2 passage, but not possible on the bay side because it’s a private marina.

Plantation Yacht Harbor Marina (Florida Keys Inside Route, near Statute Mile 1155)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 03-25-2011

Plantation Yacht Harbor Marina lies along the Florida Keys Inside Route (ICW) a short hop south and west of Tavernier Creek. It is one of the most transient friendly facilities between Jewfish Creek and Marathon!

Nice marina with all amenities, and very nice dockmaster. The beach is great with kids. Be careful when approaching the fuel dock at low tide, there is a rock on the right…I touched it even with my 4′3″ keel…

4-FOOT MLW Depths Reported on Snake Creek Channel (Florida Keys, near Islamorada), 2/25/11

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 02-25-2011

For several years now, there’s been a concern about MLW depths on the Hawk Channel side of the Snake Creek Channel. That’s a real problem, as Snake Creek is the only really reliable route for cruising sized craft to cruise from the Florida Keys Inside Route to Hawk Channel, or the other way around, bbetween Angelfish Creek and Channel Five.
Captain John’s report below is the first I’ve heard of 4-FOOT depths on the Snake Creek passage. PLEASE share with us depths you’ve recently recorded while running Snake Creek by clicking the “Comment on This Posting/Marina/Anchorage/Bridge” link below.

We went out Snake Creek MM1156 yesterday 2-23-11 an hour before high tide and came back through (after snorkeling at Hen and Chicks) an hour after high tide. Shallowest point was on western entrance where chart shows 4ft and I saw 5ft, which agrees with the 1ft tide we had. Seemed deeper closer to the two red markers.

on Snow Bird

March 1, 2011 after calling both Boat US & Sea Tow for local info we opted to go out (bay side to ocean side) Indian Creek Channel instead of Snake. Both confirmed shoaling/sandbar on OCEAN side. Both said do-able but tides have been unusually low. On a high we might only have 6 extra inches or so to our advantage. We draw 4′. Called USCG, who have a station there & they confirmed shoaling there but said stay in the middle of the channel. Also called marina located on Snake & they said do-able too. Still we opted to go Indian. Which was plenty deep but has a 27′ fixed bridge. Slightly confusing at bridge as there was a nun & can that was for ANOTHER channel. Stay with the daymarkers & follow the number sequence.

The Matecumbe Bight Anchorage is located off the Florida Keys Inside Route, near Statute Mile 1166, and it lies  south-southeast of marker #97. As Captain Dan notes, this is a good overnight haven as long as fresh northerly winds are NOT in the offing.

Nice spot….good for anything but strong north winds. You might even have it to yourself.

What are latest depths on entry to Snake Creek from ICW? We have 4′8 draft and are going to dock at Snake Creek Marina. This is our first trip from Miami since we got our new boat. Can we make it all the way there on the inside?

Good Times at the Lignumvitae Key Mooring Field

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 02-12-2011

The Florida State Park mooring field reviewed below lies off the northwesterly shores of Lignumvitae Key, which is itself found near the Indian Key Channel, and Lignumvitae Channel, off the Florida Keys Inside Route (near Islamarada).
If you do stop here, don’t miss going ashore and taking the tour, BUT be SURE to apply a liberal amount of insect repellent first!

We dropped the anchor on 11/28/2010 at 2:30am and we really enjoyed the place in the morning when sun came up!! It’s peaceful and beautiful. The wind was East.

Matecumbe Bight Anchorage (Statute Mile 1166)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 05-28-2010

The anchorage so accurately described below by Captain Ron lies off the Inside/ICW Florida Keys route, just southwest of the long gap between Upper and Lower Matecumbe Keys. With winds blowing from the south, southeast or east, this is a great place to anchor!

This is one of our favorite Keys anchorages. For some reason, the water is always clear, even on the turn of the tides, and the holding is superb. We frequently check our bottom here with the excellent visibility and is a nice place to take a dip. We have rarely seen other boats here. Even if the wind switched from the West, we wouldn’t worry as the most you’d get is a bumpy 2-3 foot chop. There [are no services] available here to the cruiser.

Bamboo Key Anchorage (Florida Keys Inside/ICW Route, near St. M. 1185)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 05-25-2010

Hmmmm. Sounds like getting an anchor to hold on these waters could be a real chore. We suggest you take Captain Ron’s report into account BEFORE trying to drop the hook here.
Darn! This a beautiful spot!

We once tried to drop the hook at Bamboo Key for over a half hour because of the beautiful water clarity and serenity. After numerous attempts in calm conditions, the hook would not set. We discovered it is a thin layer of sand over hard coral. We would not consider anchoring here even to snorkel without someone aboard and that would only be in very light conditions. Otherwise, very pretty.

Islamorado Anchorage + Lor-e-lei Restaurant, Cabana Bar, and Marina (near St. M. 1160, Inside/ICW Route)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 05-07-2010

Sounds like Captains John and Susan dropped the hook in the nearby “Islamorada Anchorage, and then dinghied into Lorelei. Clearly, they had an unfortunate experience there.

We also anchored off the Lor-E-Lei and went in for refreshments and dinner. It was early so we sat at the bar (in the shade) and had a few adult beverages and then had dinner. Dinner was OK except the Fritters were raw inside. We paid, no complaining, and headed to the outside to sit and listen to the entertainment which had just kicked off. One more beer and we were heading back to the boat. The Waitress rudely informed us that we could not sit out there unless we ordered food. No signs stating such. I told her that I had already spent 50 bucks with tip and she said,”I make my money from tips.” and told us we could not sit. Rude wait staff will always cause patrons to leave. Stay away from this place unless that is OK with you.
John and Susan

My experience here is: Nice place, Beautiful Sunsets, sandy beach outdoor seating with torches lit, nice atmosphere, great live entertainment, kids have room to run, mediocre food.
Been here several times and never had a problem with the staff but then again I was eating or drinking until I left….. you can sit at the bar and listen to the music if you’re not going to order food, it’s just as close to the stage as the sandy area, just on the other side of the stage and still outdoors.

Plantation Yacht Harbor Marina (FL Keys Inside Route, between Tavernier Creek and Islamorada)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 04-07-2010

Plantation Key Yacht Harbor is now one of only two facilities that offer transient dockage for cruising size craft between Jewfish Key and Islamorada. The other is Mangrove Marina.
We have always been very impressed with the Plantation Key facility. Shelter is excellent, the amenities are surprisingly good, particularly for a municipal marina, and there’s shopping and dining close by. What more could you ask?

Like a magnet we are always drawn back to this great marina. Tim and his crew just have it right. Friendly, knowledgable, and very professional. The marina is well protected and very modern. Tennis, beautiful beach, huge pool, clean showers and rest rooms. Dockside pumpouts. Entertainment and great eateries are nearby but require a car. First class in every respect.

Lignumvitae Key Mooring Field and Visitor’s Center

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 03-22-2010

Lignumvitae Key, named for a very slow growing tree which can be found here, lies on the long gap between Upper and Lower Matecumbe Keys. There is a visitor’s dock and visitors center near the eastern banks, while a small mooring field will be discovered off the isle’s northwestern banks.

Lignumvitae House and Tour continue to be only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. One can visit and walk around the house area only on Mondays and Thursdays. The outside of the dock is available to tie up but watch the depth – I think it was under five feet. We tied to a mooring ball on 3-11-2010 – there are only two left.

Plantation Yacht Harbor Marina (Florida Bay/Inside/ICW Route, in Islamorada – neat St. M. 1155)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 03-05-2010

I’ve always said that Plantation Yacht Harbor is one of the very best facilities on the Inside/ICW Florida Keys route. Looks like Captains Pete and Mary Ann agree!

I recommend Plantation Yacht Club Marina in Islamorada for anyone with a boat that doesn’t draw more than 5′ and who wants good protection from these blasted fronts in the Keys. The mangrove breakwater makes the whitecaps out on Florida Bay a non-issue. John is their terrific dockmaster with an amusing sense of humor. A marina slip includes all the amenities of Founders’ Park: a sheltered beach with showers; bocce, volleyball, and tennis courts; a huge pool; a dog park; a community band shell with free concerts; picnic tables and gas grills that work; locked showers and lundry room for marina residents; and cable and pump outs at EVERY slip, a real luxury. Fuel prices are great too.

Plantation Key Yacht Harbor (near Islmorada, St. M. 1155)

Plantation Key Yacht Harbor is one of only two marina facilities directly on the Florida Keys Inside/ICW/Florida Bay route that caters to crusiers. It is located southwest of Tavernier Creek, just off the ICW.

Was assistant dockmaster there for a spell-nice bunch of liveaboards and always an opening for transients, ask for John for the best and friendliest help, get a taxi to Lazy Days for the best fish anywhere. Lorelei for sunsets, avoid Trading Post for groceries unless you like to pay double, boat over to the sandbar halfway out of whale harbor oceanside at low tide for a nice walkabout on the sand, take a fold up chair and a six pack ( please don’t litter) and kick back. See you there soon.

Shallow Depths on Snake Creek Channel/Inlet

Posted by opcom | Posted on 01-28-2010

Snake Creek is an important passage that allows Florida Keys cruisers to easily pass from the Inside/ICW/Florida Bay route to the offshore Hawk Channel route, or the other way around. A couple of years ago, I began to hear reports that the Snake Creek channel was shoaling on its extreme Hawk Channel side tip. However, the report from Captain Brad below is the most alarming I’ve seen. Looks like vessels drawing 5 1/2 feet or better may have trouble in Snake Creek, even at high tide.
It would be very helpful to one and all if some other cruisers would chime in, and share their experiences and soundings observed while running Snake Creek within the last several months. Just click on the “Comment on This Posting/Marina/Anchorage/Bridge” link below.

I had a slip in Islamora for a month (October). [My] boat draws 5”7′. [I] ran aground in Snake Creek on the way in on a mid tide, then bumped twice in the channel.
Tried to day sail bumped twice on the way out and wound up hard aground on a falling tide and was stuck for 7 hours, 150 feet from open water.
When I left there the final time on an almost high tide. bumped once in the middle but was ok after that. Even on a +2 tide lots of places set of my shallow water alarm (6ft)
Brad

I went through here with a 53′ trawler drawing 5 feet with tides starting to go out. Jan. 13, 2010, 2:00 PM
Very low depths but no touching going east into the Hawk Channel. Worst point, according to my dephtfinder, was just east of the last markers where the depth was showing right at 5 feet. My keel did touch coming in to the creek on the western end.

Coral Bay Marina (Inside Route, Islamorada, FL, near Statute Mile 1160)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 12-22-2009

Coral Bay Marina is located near World Wide Sportsman and Bayside Marina on Little Basin. Depths can get a bit skinny here during low tide.

We called the marina on a Saturday with tornadoes on the way. The emergency number reached the owner who said “Come on in.” With a long face dock we were secure from the not-as-bad-as-forecast storms, but watched boats drag in the anchorage. Basic but good facilities with access to land-based services. And helpful characters in the marina. It was a welcome haven we would recommend.
Jeff Wingfield

Location, Location, Location, this marina is smack dab right in the middle of the some of the finest restaurants, bars, live music and shopping in the Keys.
It’s very small and rustic, tucked away in the mangroves and just a short taxi ride away is all the fun you can imagine, five star restaurants, resorts and spas or no star dive bars and everything in-between, I like them all and there’s live music everywhere !! Some art galleries, museums, etc..etc..etc… Plus, The Trading Post, a small gourmet market just one block away, all the fresh food you could want, open 24 hrs when I was there. Several shops that the ladies will like are within walking distance as well.
Great staff, friendly and helpful live aboards, small but updated and very clean bathrooms / showers, a small laundry and a full service yard. I would go in and out with a five foot draft at mid to high tide.
Be sure to have a good recent landside guide when you come in.
