      Praise for Personally Yours and Seaside Gifts, Beaufort, NC, AICW Statute Mile 201

      Personally Yours and Seaside Gifts is located on the Beaufort municipal waterfront at 412 Front Street and their phone is 252-728-6461.

      I was in Beaufort NC just this past week from Norway and found a very small & inexpensive provisions store inside a gift store called Personally Yours Sea Side Gifts They had milk, eggs and fresh fruit along with a few other provisions items. They are right on the water across from the dock house. The Taylor Creek deli was closed at 7:00 pm and that was a bit upsetting. This shop was open and was very pleasant and what they did not have they got for us to our boat by the following morning at 5:00 am before we pulled to head up to Main. Very nice and personal. 4 stars, if they don’t have they will try to get it. Give them a try we will come back again and service there store Thank You for being on the water and delivering to our boat.

      These are not the first comments of unhappiness with prices at the Beaufort Municipal Docks we have had expressed here. Price can easily be blamed on the economy, but attitude and service should never be compromised. Despite such dockage problems, the town of Beaufort, NC is still known as a real success story along the Waterway, and this wonderful port of call remains one of our favorites, anytime, anywhere!

      Used to like going in here. As others have stated prices are high and most of staff has an attitude. I believe they are city employees with no concept of customer service. Would recommend city hire a contractor to operate facility. Similar to what Fernandina Marina did with great results.
      Morehead Yacht basin is much better and only $6 taxi ride if you want to eat in Beaufort.

      I used to stop at this dock every time north and south until about 7 years ago we got into a dispute because their fuel price was so much higher than Jarrett Bay. His comment was that maybe I should just stay at Jarrett Bay. Have not been back since.

      Report from Cape Lookout Bight Anchorage, southeast of Beaufort Inlet

      Cape Lookout Bight is a wonderful, natural harbor formed by Cape Lookout’s curve of land. This superb anchorage, one of the most popular in North Carolina, is best accessed via the Beaufort Inlet, rather than through Back Sound.

      Oct 5 Anchored at Lookout Point [Cape Lookout Bight], great anchorage very calm and clean water, well worth the short trip.

      Report on Town Creek Inner Anchorage, Beaufort, NC, AICW Statute Mile 201

      Town Creek is east of the south end of Gallants Channel in Beaufort, NC, east of unlighted daybeacon #1.

      We anchored here in the Summer of 2012. Good hold and swinging room, about 7 feet deep that I remember. Nothing spectacular because there’s town and other activity in the vicinity. Don’t go too far to the southern side of Town Creek, it’s awfully shallow. We wandered too far that way coming in at night and found bottom but were able to get off of it reasonably easily. Mostly black pudding mud on the bottom all around.

      Good Visit to Jonaquin/Cedar Creek Anchorage, AICW Statute Mile 188

      Jonaquin Creek is just east of the anchorage symbol shown in our chartview of Cedar Creek below and has been successfully used by several of our readers.

      We tried Jonaquin Creek early in the summer 2012, after reading Chuck and Susan’s post here. It is a very narrow opening at the back left of Cedar Creek. Very nice anchorage, peaceful, about 5-6 foot of water. We came in very slow 2-3 knots with eyes glued to the depth finder at the entrance, checking for mud swirls behind the boat. We draw 3-1/2 feet in our trawler, and had no issues. Not much swinging room, but very calm and rustic. Black pudding bottom, outstanding wind protection.

      Comments about Shackleford Banks/Jetty Anchorage (off the AICW, east of Beaufort Inlet)

      Shackleford Banks Anchorage lies three miles southeast from statute mile 206 of the Waterway in Morehead City, NC and Capt. Matthews’ recommended anchorage is 4.8 miles southeast from the Waterway.

      We have anchored here for years. HOWEVER. There is a better spot. On this spot the currents can be too strong to want to swim in, even though the water is pretty clear. I have had my anchor drag in the sand before.
      The BETTER SPOT is at 34’40.58N by 076’36.58W. about a mile East of this anchorage. It is marked by buoys to enter. The chart snippet in this listing is NOT accurate, it is dated. You must go back to a point around 34’41.53N by 76’38.90W. The main chart in Cruisers Net shows this correctly. Anyway, in this other anchorage there is less current, less day-partyers, and a good bit of rustic shoreline. The main attraction though is the reduced current in that area. Much better for holding and better swinging room.

      Blackbeard and Queen Anne’s Revenge Exhibit, Beaufort, NC (Statute Mile 201)

      Frank Erwin, author of the message below, is a good friend and an MTOA Board of Directors member. The Blackbeard and Queen Anne’s Revenge exhibit which is the subject of his text below is now housed in the main North Carolina Mariner’s Museum building, located on Front Street in Beaufort. It’s an easy step from the Beaufort Municipal Docks or either of the Taylor Creek dinghy docks to the Museum’s doorstep.

      Beaufort has the NC Maritime Museum which has an exhibit of Blackbeard’s Queen Ann Revenge (found in the local Beaufort, NC inlet) http://www.ncmaritime.org/main/events.htm.
      This exhibit highlights artifacts recovered from the shipwreck believed to be the former flagship of Blackbeard the pirate, the Queen Anne’s Revenge. A shipwreck salvage company, called Intersal, Inc., discovered the shipwreck in 1996 and gave the rights of excavation to the State of North Carolina. Artifacts are recovered from 25 feet of water by state underwater archaeologists with the aid of the museum, non-profit private companies, and educational institutions. After the artifacts are conserved by archaeologists, the NC Maritime Museum will house the conserved artifacts and prepare them for exhibit. A visit to Blackbeard and the QAR Project will provide more information.

      Thanks so much for sharing this information with cruisers! We officially opened the `Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge 1718’³ exhibit in June 2011 in the Museum (located on Front Street along Taylors Creek.) Previously, some of the artifacts were kept at the Museum’s annex site in preparation for the exhibit. But, now, they are on public display in downtown Beaufort.

      The neat anchorage is in Taylors Creek just in front of the Beaufort Town Docks – (252)728-2503…lots of current…try to come in only at slack tide… you can also anchor out in the creek in front of the docks…usually crowded on weekends… but 3 dinghy docks and very cruiser friendly….very historic and 2 pre-revolutionary cemeteries…. or nearby and protected is Town Creek Marina – http://www.towncreekmarina.com with plenty of room out front for anchorage.

      Tide Boards Missing on Croatan Sound Channel Bridges, off the AICW

      Croatan Sound Channel Bridges

      Croatan Sound connects Albemarle Sound to the north and Pamlico Sound to the south via a broad channel crossed by two sets of fixed bridges. The older, northernmost span has a vertical clearance of 45ft, and has LONG been the bane of sailors who must use the far more difficult Roanoke Sound – Old House channel to cruise south from the AICW/Albemarle Sound to Pamlico Sound, or the other way around. The southernmost twin Highway 64 bridges feature 66ft of vertical clearance, and one might think with their installation a few years ago, the older span would have been removed. For whatever reason, this has not come to pass.

      There are also no clearance boards on either of the bridges that cross the Croatan Sound.

      Beaufort, NC Town Commissioners Take NO Action on Proposed Anchoring Registration Requirements at 8/28/12 Meeting

      The Salty Southeast Cruisers’ Net has published two previous articles about a controversial proposal that would require all boat owners who anchor in Beaufort, NC’s Town Creek or Taylor Creek, to register their vessels with the Beaufort Police Department (see /?p=94843 and /?p=95293). Please note that the status reported in the second linked article has now been superseded by the information below.
      Thanks to generous input from “Cartaret County News-Times” (http://www.carolinacoastonline.com/news_times/) Managing Editor, Ms. Beth Blake, and reporter Ben Hogwood, we can report that the Beaufort Town Commissioners took NO ACTION on these controversial proposals during their meeting of 8/28/12. Instead, a committee has been appointed to further study the matter. This special group met on 8/20/12, and apparently no agreement was reached.
      Our “reading of the tea leaves” here at the Salty Southeast Cruisers’ Net is that these proposals may now just wither on the vine and never be heard from again. Then again, that might not be the case at all. All cruisers please be assured that we are watching this situation closely, and will bring you news of any new developments as soon as they occur!
      For now though, cruisers can still anchor on the popular waters of Beaufort’s Town Creek and Taylor Creek with no worries. How nice!

      Morehead City, NC Dining/Seafood Shopping Recommendations (Statute Mile 203-205)

      Now, here is a VERY useful posting from our good friends, Captains George and Ann, who liveaboard in Morehead City, North Carolina. Some of the dining/shopping recommendations below are found within easy walking distance of SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Morehead City Yacht Basin, or the other area dockage facilities, including the Morehead City (Municipal) Docks, while others will require a short taxi ride. However, you get there, rely on these recommendations from knowledgeable MC locals!!!!

      Georgia B’s is [found] on the north side of Arendell between 5th and 6th before you get to the wonderful City News stand and the ACE Marine Hardware from the [Morehead City] Yacht Basin. Piccatas moved further west on Arendell on the south side,
      still pretty good for lunch, for dinner we tend to go to Beaufort Grocery Too (where the old Shepherd’s Point was, and who in turn serves an excellent Sunday brunch), Ruddy Duck, Wind and Sea, Circa 81 (not walking distance but fantastic). or of course Floyd’s, but I have had some spotty luck there lately. We don’t go out that often as I am married to a great chef, but Beaufort/MHC are certainly great dining towns given their size.
      I also can’t leave the topic of local eating without mentioning the wonderful Blue Ocean seafood market on Bridge’s street before you get to Lowe’s foods.
      They mostly supply local restaurants but have a great retail shop. If Eric the manager is there he gives out great cooking tips for any of the plethora of locally caught species that typically don’t show up in supermarkets. He is an outstanding chef in his own right; he cooked for a dinner party we had once and it was superb. Ant cruisers provisioning in MHC must include Blue Ocean in their shopping itinerary!

      A Successful Navigation From Shackleford Banks To Eastern Taylor Creek, Beaufort, NC near AICW Statute Mile 201

      After running east past the primary Beaufort, NC waterfront, Taylor Creek leads to Harkers Island, the Straits, and eventually Core Sound. Some brave/local cruisers also use this route as part of a “back door” entrance to the extremely popular anchorage in Cape Lookout Bight.
      Harkers Island, the Straits and Core Sound are some of the least discovered waters along the North Carolina coastline, but, unfortunately, ALL these waters are shallow and navigationally difficult, to say the least. And, if that’s not enough, the passage from Taylor Creek’s easterly mouth to Back Sound and Harkers Island eastern has always been a challenge for any vessel with a draft over 3 ft. Our North Carolina Anchorage Directory listing for Taylor Creek refers to the western end of the creek abeam the Beaufort waterfront.

      Claiborne –
      We transited the east end of Taylor’s Creek [on the way back to Beaufort from Shackleford Banks] on July 7th about 5pm at approximate low tide. We saw a center-console nice fishing boat grounded. We saw another boat start to get grounded and then back away free. The channel is marked by PVC pipe with green and red tape. Very narrow and very easy to see in clear weather which it was that day and time. I would recommend to no one to try this cut fast, though I saw this a couple times before we made it through.
      We have a 36′ trawler with full keel and protected prop, so I decided to give it a go. Additionally I have a temperamental depth finder at low depths with some kind of voltage anxiety, so when I slow down, depth goes a bit crazy – 850 feet when there is only 3 and so on. When we are tearing up the water and raising Cain, we do about 8 knots. I decided to proceed more modestly at 3-4 knots and had no trouble. As stated, the entrance is narrow with one set of PVC markers about 50 feet apart, maybe less. At our slow speed, I know if we touch bottom it should be gentle barnacle scrape and not much more. On this day, we had no touches and followed the markers carefully into Taylor’s Creek without incident.
      We did see a few 18 to 22-foot boats come tearing through there at about 20 knots. I say good luck with that and make sure your insurance is paid. We were careful and had no issues.

      Spouter Inn Has A New Look, A New Bar and the Same GREAT Food (Beaufort,NC – near Statute Mile 201)

      The following is a perilous statement, particularly when we are speaking about Beaufort, North, which has such dining attractions as Beaufort Grocery Company and the Blue Moon, but we think Spouter Inn (218 Front Street, 252-728-5190, http://thespouterinn.com/) offers the very best food in town. But now, there’s even more!
      During a June, 2012 cruise to Beaufort, we came strolling into Spouter’s main Front Street entrance, and were surprised and more than a little pleased by an entirely new, pastel color scheme running the full length of the entrance hall. Equally eye pleasing was a collection of local art displayed down the hallway. We soon learned that this same, new, light and airy color scheme had been carried throughout the entire dining establishment. Please be SURE to follow the “Click Here For Photo Gallery” link below to see for yourself.
      After strolling down the hallway, we were, if possible, even more pleased to learn that more than the color scheme had changed. Part of the interior dining room has been converted to a very cozy bar, with a good view of Taylor Creek out the back. We stopped here for an “attitude adjustment,” and were totally charmed by this new enhancement.
      We enjoyed two meals at Spouter Inn during this trip, and found the food just as good as ever. For lunch Karen’s Bird Shoal Sandwich, a delectable combination of egg salad, melted white cheddar cheese. bacon and leafy lettuce on whole wheat bread, and my crabcake in a pita pocket, were absolutely scrumptious. During our evening meal, the first-rate, first-mate was, as always, very taken with her mixed seafood grill (broiled), as I was with my decadent Scallops Parmigiana!
      If your waistline can stand it, don’t miss Spouter’s dessert tray, and, particularly, their on-site bakery, which is found just to the right as you enter from Front Street. My oh my, my appetite is going crazy just typing this article.
      Trust me on this one fellow cruisers, heed the call, and don’t dare miss Spouter Inn when next your vessel is snuggled into either Beaufort Town Docks or anchored on the tranquil waters of Taylor Creek.
      And, very conveniently for we of the cruising persuasion, the westernmost of Beaufort/Taylor Creek’s two dinghy docks is located next door to Spouter Inn! What more could one ask for?

      Taylor Creek Grocery – Beaufort, NC (near Statute Mile 201)

      Back on 3/12/12, we published a report here on the SSECN (see /?p=81815), about a new downtown Beaufort, NC grocery story that was about to open at the corner of Front and Queen Streets, within a block of the Beaufort Town Docks. At the time of our first visit, the store was just about to open, and things looked promising, but ever since, we’ve been itching to return and check out the finished product.
      Well, that’s exactly what happened during the week of June 11, 2012. And what we found was MOST impressive. Really, with no exaggeration or embellishment, I can’t remember when I have ever seen such a well laid out, beautifully merchandised small grocery store as what we found at Taylor Creek Grocery (252-838-1495, 525 Front Street). PLEASE follow the “Click Here For Photo Album” button below to check out the visual images for yourself!
      We also had occasion to twice try out the in-store deli, and we can attest that the Reuben and turkey sandwiches are first-rate, not to mention the fudge brownies.
      So, when next your travels take your vessel to the shores of Taylor Creek, possibly North Carolina’s single most popular port of call, run, don’t walk to Taylor Creek Grocery. You won’t be sorry!

      I guess quality has its price, but I was in that store last week, and the prices were outrageously high. So, enjoy, but bring a thick wallet.

      High Praise for Jarrett Bay Boatworks, AICW Statute Mile 197, Beaufort, NC

      Jarrett Bay is actually located north of Beaufort, NC, on the Core Creek Canal section of the AICW. This is a superb facility for dry storage, and for any sort of repair work. There are many repair firms on-site, including our friends at Core Creek Marine. And, oh yes, even though Jarrett Bay is not strictly a marina, there is some transient dockage available by the fuel dock, and both gasoline and diesel fuel can be purchased.

      Just to pass on experience at Jarrett Bay:
      I stopped on a Saturday to try to find a small part which had some immediate importance but that is not the story. There was an ancient trawler in the slings belonging to an equally ancient couple headed back to the NE. They had struck something and had serious vibration. Turns out that Jarrett Bay had come in on a day they were closed, the manager and two helpers, to lift them out to fix the problem. They could find nothing wrong, maybe something had hung up on the props and had cleared.
      The notable thing was they did not charge them a cent. Not even for the short haul. The owner did tip the dockhands. Now that is service.
      BTW they did not have the part i needed they gave me something that was a temporary fix, also for free.
      Keep these guys on your list if you need work done near Beaufort.

      Jarrett Bay is also a Detroit Covington dealer, parts and repair center. I’ve had good service on my Covington 6V92’s Jesse is the parts guy there.Prices are reasonable and factory Detroit oil and fuel filters are downright cheap.

      Restful Night in Cedar Creek Anchorage, AICW Statute Mile 188

      As Capt Miller avows: wide swing radius and extra scope can indeed make for a restful night . However, Cedar Creek, a very popular AICW anchorage, found immediately adjacent to the Waterway between Neuse River and Beaufort, NC, can be crowded with other vessels and crab pots. There is also a sunken sailboat practically in the center of the creek’s entrance.

      Cruising News:
      We anchored in Cedar Creek at mile 187 on 4/27/2012. We motored a swing circle and found the shallows much deeper than charted. We dropped on the 6 foot line in the eastern corner of the anchorage. A longer saiboat had gone even further in to starboard.
      The anchor grabbed and held well. With an available swing circle of 600 feet and no other boats anchored nearby, I savored the luxury of paying out extra scope and sleeping soundly.
      There appears to be a shoal just northeast of the front range marker, “9”. It is marked with three white pipes. We entered and departed south of “9”.
      It’s a tree lined anchorage and the only disturbance was an occassional wake from boats on the ICW (Be careful when cooking over the stove).

      Comments on Beaufort Municipal Docks, Beaufort , NC, AICW Statute Mile 201

      This is not the first unhappiness with prices at the Municipals Docks we have had expressed here. Price can easily be blamed on the economy, but attitude and service should never be compromised. Despite such dockage problems, the town of Beaufort, NC is still known as a real success story along the Waterway and this wonderful port of call remains one of our favorites, anytime, anywhere!

      Dockage on the facedocks is now $2.75/ft. This marina used to be such a good place to go to because of the restaurants and quaint local businesses. But, staff is unfriendly and prices exorbitant. Would think Beaufort docks could help the local economy a lot by lowering their slips rate to encourage boaters from SE NC to come visit for the weekend and spend money in town. Boats must be bypassing Beaufort and going over to Morehead City or anchoring out’¦’¦cause there certainly weren’t many boats in marina. On a positive note, we ate dinner at Front Street Grill at Stillwater and food was wonderful!!!! Highly recommend.

      We were `burnt’ our first trip south when we had to stay three days due to weather Nov. 2010. Blew one month’s budget. Staff then was friendly, but will not visit unless absolutely necessary for fuel, and then will definitely anchor.

Despite such dockage problems, the town of Beaufort, NC is still known as a real success story along the Waterway and this wonderful port of call remains one of our favorites, anytime, anywhere! And, as Capt. Winter points out, a “must see”!

      The town marina [Municipal Docks] was always a must stop for us as we go north/south (note we live in NC). Their reputation is now better than actual, as we have watched this place go up in cost while not maintaining facilities, but more importantly, bad attitudes from the staff. Staff especially are getting bad reputation up/down the ICW. We now go to Morehead City where all the marinas/restaurants are working hard for business. Beaufort is a must see town, but there are other places to dock in order to see the town. The savings on dockage will more than pay for a cab.
