    • Resolution to Tax Woes in Hanover County, Cape Fear River, Wilmington, NC

“Death and Taxes”…what can you say? Our sympathies Captain Chappell. Fortunately, this situation was resolved.

RE: New Hanover County (Wilmington, NC)
They not only are zealous but are quite bloody minded in the way they deal with People. They continued to bill me for two years after the boat was sold, and just will not accept the fact the boat was not in their County during the next year after I made the mistake of staying over January 1st the Year before.
As I was cruising south’¦.and did not take up a slip or mooring anywhere and thus had no Marina Bill to show’¦they continue to insist I owed them for the full year despite not being there.
They freely admit the Marina documented my departure date but despite having that information’¦.continue to ignore what that statement said’¦.’Departed!’
My advice to all’¦.pass right on through New Hanover County’¦.do not stop’¦do not buy a single thing in New Hanover County’¦.go on into South Carolina where you are welcome and do not have the burden of dealing with the New Hanover County Tax Office.
Their comment to me, `Tax has to be paid every year on your boat!’ sums up their attitude. They refuse to accept that Boaters only have to comply with the laws for the Tax Jurisdiction they find themselves within. Which for them means a great many of New Hanover County boaters cross the SC State Line for a couple of weeks, pay for a Slip and escape paying taxes to New Hanover County’¦.which saves a lot of money for the Boater.
If I had known the Tax problems I would have with New Hanover County (Wilmington, NC)’¦.I would never have stopped there. As people have noted’¦.New Bern Tax folks are quite pleasant and helpful in the way they conduct their business of collecting taxes’¦.which is not the case in New Hanover County.
      Ralph Chappell

      Cruising News:
I posted earlier about dealing with the New Hanover County Tax Office re Tax issues on my boat. My earlier post was not very favorable about that organization.
Upon reaching a Supervisory level staff member we quickly worked out a resolution that was quite fair and not at all problematic.
Perhaps there is hope after all.
I believe the secret is as always….only deal with a person who has the authority to actually make a determination and not the low ranking clerks who have no decision making authority.
My comments about the North Carolina Tax law re Cruising Sailors remains unchanged. The State drives off way too much business and thus creates a great hardship on businesses that would otherwise enjoy trade with those traveling about on their boats.
The other advice unfortunately remains….be a pack rat with receipts, bills, logs, notes, journals, photographs, and bar tabs….to prove exactly where your boat was at any given day, date, and time. Seems a pity it has to be that way.
      Ralph Chappell

    • Don’t Dare Miss A Stop in Southport, NC (Statute Mile 309)

Southport MarinaAs a boy, I spent many a summer living aboard in the old Southport Harbor. I still have many fond memories of this delightful village!
Much of the dockage Captains Kay and Bob speak about below is located in the older, easterly basin, while modern Southport Marina, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, lies just next door, and within easy walking distance of all the old harbor’s dining attractions.
Really, folks, don’t miss a stop in Southport! Those who just cruise on by are missing one of the great ports of call along the AICW!

We are from Southport, NC, and think that Bald Head and Southport are both great stops. Bald Head does charge a “day Dockage” fee for docking and dining but last summer it was $20. Their overnight dockage is between $1.50 and $2.00 per foot, and again a great stop. There are several restaurants that offer free dockage, no power or water, if you dine with them, [Yacht Basi] Provision being one of the most popular, plus the City of Southport offers one free dock for overnight, with 15 amp. power and water, in the back of the Yacht Basin.
Also, Southport Marina is just next to the Southport Yacht Basin, $1.75 per foot, and an easy walk to the restaurants and downtown.
We have seen the movie Safe Haven, filmed in Southport, and think that it is great, and accurately reflects our town.
Make Southport and Bald Head Island a stop on your travels!

    • Good Words for Bald Head Island Marina

910-457-7380Well, of course, Bald Head Island Marina is a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, as well as being an AGLCA sponsor!
This facility is found hard by the seaward mouth of the Cape Fear River, within sight of the “Old Baldy” lighthouse! Give them a try this spring. You won’t be sorry!

This is Janice posting from [AGLCA] Lieutenant Sponsor, Bald Head Island. This is a beautiful marina and you should be sure to stop by when you’re doing the Intracoastal in North Carolina. Ben and Doug say “Hello” to all of you!
      Safe cruising,
      Janice Kromer

We think Baldhead is also a great stop, with a lighthouse within walking distance of the marina that you can go up in and have a great view. Most of the other North Carolina lighthouses are well off the path of loopers, so this is a good reason to stop at Baldhead as well.

    • More Good Words for Wilmington City/Public Docks, on the Cape Fear River

Wilmington City Docks - Click for Chartview

Wilmington, NC, on the Cape Fear River off the AICW, is a longtime popular side trip for many Waterway cruisers. The City Docks are located along the easterly banks of the Cape Fear River, in downtown Wilmington, just west of the high-rise Hilton hotel.

We were in Wilmington for a few days, but would have gladly stayed longer. Water and power available, but no fuel or other services. (Told you can use Hilton facilities but not comfortable with `sneaking’ around.) Location can’t be beat for browsing, shopping and dining. Highly recommend the Front Street Brewery for excellent food. Directly across from the BB North Carolina. Watch out for floating debris and ensure you check your stern for trees (in my case 3) fouling the running gear.

    • Good Words For Bennett Brothers Yachts/Cape Fear Marina – off the AICW on Cape Fear River in Wilmington, NC

Bennett Brothers, Luxury Yachts for Sale by Bennett Brothers YachtsAlways very nice to hear that a fellow cruiser has had a good experience with one of our SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSORS! Great dockage and quality repairs are what you will find here. In addition to the “mile” dinghy ride, mentioned below, you can also take a quick taxi ride into the downtown Wilmington district, where you will find much to see, do and EAT. By all accounts, don’t dare miss the Pilot House restaurant!

We had work done there this Spring and were very pleased with the results. The docks are nice floating docks just north of town…not a great location for sightseeing unless you dinghy about a mile southward, but a great location as a hurricane hole or to get work done
      efficiently and reasonably.
      Betsy Johnson
      Rick ‘n Roll

And, from our good friend, Captain Tricia Bennett, owner of this fine facility:

Bennett Brothers Yachts is located in a hurricane safe haven at the Cape Fear Marina in Wilmington, NC. Historically, ships have fled to the location on the Northeast Cape Fear River to seek refuge. Bennett Brothers Yachts is the full service boatyard on site at the marina. The location is recognized by insurance companies as a safe haven and they may reduce your premium or contribute to a hurricane haulout at our facility. We have our 2013 Hurriance Reservation Plan, available on our website – http://www.bbyachts.com. There is no cost to sign up. Southport Marina is always good and a treat! As you know, laundry and shower facilities are on site. PJ’s, a converted gas station across the street is great for breakfast. Moore Street Market, recommended by a local, was a lunchtime treat. We’d never have seen their obscure sign. Came upon a retired biology prof who’s a water colorist and such a delightful man. Love his work and the bright colors of local scenes. When we visit Southport, it’s always difficult to drag ourselves away.

Wilmington, NC, on the Cape Fear River off the AICW, is a longtime popular side trip for many Waterway cruisers. The City Docks are located along the easterly banks of the Cape Fear River, in downtown Wilmington, just west of the high-rise Hilton hotel.

Just spent a week here on the dock in front of the Hilton. Would have stayed a month but the city will only give a daily rate and it was just too expensive to stay longer. I am utterly enchanted with downtown Wilmington and the city dock access to the area is excellent. The wooden River Walk runs for a mile along the riverfront and is just alive with walkers, runners, etc. We even had a very large 5k race group come running by one afternoon. The battleship North Carolina is right across the river and open for touring. The Cape Fear Museum and the Wilmington Railroad Museum are both within walking distance and very worth the time. Farmers Market on Saturday morning, beautiful old homes, gorgeous old churches, lots of shopping and plenty of restaurant variety, Wilmington has it all. The only negatives are dock cost, being waked fairly frequently and many large logs floating up and down the river.

The search continued Monday morning for a boy believed drowned in the waters beneath the Snow’s Cut bridge Saturday.
The 13-year-old Rocky Point boy went missing about 1:45 pm Saturday. He was with his parents and 3-year-old brother swimming and fishing along the southern banks of the Intracoastal Waterway near Carolina Beach, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

A U.S. Coast Guard boat searches the water under Snow’s Cut Bridge for a teenager who disappeared in the water about 1:40 p.m. on Aug. 4, 2012.

This article from WCET – TV6, Wilmington, NC. Click link below for full article:

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – A Wilmington woman is dead and another three are hurt after a boat crashed into a platform in Southport, according to the Coast Guard.
According to Sgt. Ben Meyer, Barbara Pierce, 57, was pronounced dead at New Hanover Regional Medical Center due to injuries sustained from the boat crash.
Meyer said, Pierce’s husband, Edward Pierce, 58, was driving the boat and most likely slammed into a concrete slab in the Cape Fear River, trying to avoid a collision. The two of them along with passengers Michelle Boley, 30, and Taylor Gill, 25, were headed north to Wilmington.
On Saturday night, good Samaritans helped the responding agency with the rescue. Pierce contacted the Coast Guard for help at approximately 9 p.m. A 25-foot response boat was dispatched, according to the release.

If you have more details about the circumstances of this collision, let us hear from you. Thanks!

I am puzzled as to why the obstacle that the Pierce boat struck is not lighted or better yet, removed.

Wilmington, NC, on the Cape Fear River off the AICW, is a longtime popular side trip for many Waterway cruisers.

On your way up or down the East coast consider coming up the Cape Fear River to Wilmington. There is plenty of dockage in the downtown area where numerous good restaurants, entertainment, and hotels are available. There is also fuel at one or two of the marinas close to downtown. Wilmington is more of a cosmopolitan city than its size would indicate. Numerous different types of people cross paths here including mariners, college students, nature lovers, surfers, military, country folk, country clubbers, gays, tourists, “old” Wilmington types, beach bums, and red necks and everyone seems to get along.

Wilmington Marine Center is a combination marina and extensive repair yard facility which sits in a sheltered harbor along the eastern banks of the Cape Fear River. This facility’s entrance channel cuts east abeam of marker #59.
Visitors should be prepared to find that Wilmington Marine Center is located in an industrial district. No shopping or dining is to be found within walking or even bike riding distance of the dockage basin. You will need a taxi to visit Wilmington’s many find restaurants and historic attractions.

We kept our boat at the Wilmington Marine Center for the 8 months in 2010/2011 while we were back in Florida for the fall & winter. Skip and his staff were wonderful. I cannot say too much about the level of service we received while there. When we were looking for a place to leave our boat for this layup period that we felt was protected against storms and was convenient to a boat yard, and WMC fit for us.
Gregory Poole Marine repairs is located at the marina and DeMann Diesels, Tom DeMann and company, is located across the street.
