Praise for Bath Harbor Marina (off the AICW, off Pamlico River on Bath Creek)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 05-11-2012

I just visited Bath Harbor Marina in April of 2012, and, while the grounds could use a little straightening, I agree wholeheartedly with Captains Jim and Talley, that you will not find a warmer welcome anywhere!

Cruising News:
Bath Harbor Marina, just at the bridge crossing Bath Creek, feels like coming home again. Paul Minor and his lovely wife do everything to make you feel “right at home.” Paul met us and helped tie us up in the pass through slip at the end of the pier. Everything here is just what you expect and hope for. There is a large cabaña with a couple of BBQs and lots of shade. It is the coolest place with its gentle southern breezes and pleasant conversation. Water and electric included in the transient fee. Clean bathrooms and showers. Well worth the trip up the Pamlico.

Welcome Mat Out for Cruisers at Washington, NC, off the AICW on Pamlico River

Posted by Larry | Posted on 05-06-2012

Whether you want to revisit the past or satisfy your curiosities, discover the arts or explore your true nature, you can do it from the heart of the Inner Banks - Washington, North Carolina. 800 546 0Read Captains Jim and Talley’s newsy note below, and you will discover more reasons than ever to leave the familiar confines of the AICW, and journey upsteam on the Pamlico River, to the Washington downtown waterfront. This SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR has sooo much to offer the cruising community. Tell them we sent you!

Cruising News:
So much fun coming to Washington N.C. by boat, rather than so many times by car. This little town is just on the edge of renascence, and they want cruisers to be part of it. The Dock Master, Guy Blackwell, also works at the local West Marine, and is full of information and local history. The city merchants have put together a “Welcome to Washington” bag stuffed full of coupons, business cards, flyers and advertisement for businesses all within a four block walk of the docks. We even ran into people we know. Charming town full of friendship, promise, great restaurants, and art galleries. Come here. You’ll love it.

A Tall Ship Will Make Washington, NC Waterfront Docks Its New Homeport

Posted by Larry | Posted on 03-19-2012

Washington, NC is a long-time and much valued SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, March 14, 2012, WASHINGTON, NC
The Schooner Jeanie B, a 72′ tall masted sailing vessel, will be coming to the City of Washington and become a fixture to the community of Eastern North Carolina.

The Washington Harbor District Alliance helped to formulate the new partnership between the City of Washington and The Schooner Jeanie B. This partnership creates a relationship that couples the vibrant waterfront in Washington, NC with the educational and family sailings of the vessel. Schooner Jeanie B will reconnect the rich history of Washington’s past which was active with tall ships with the present when she arrives March 21.
The Schooner Jeanie B is a traditional sailing vessel that sails with Camps Sea Gull and Seafarer during the summer months and Boy Scouts of America and the Pamlico Sea Base during the spring and fall months. Jeanie B teaches principles of sailing, ship handling, and traditional navigation including using the stars to find their way. Team and character building are another benefit the campers, scouts and students experience living aboard the boat
as they travel around the Inner Banks of North Carolina visiting various ports such as Manteo, Ocracoke, Washington and Beaufort.
The Jeanie B also provides sailing excursions during the week and weekends from the docks in Washington, NC. She can take up to 25 passengers for afternoon and evening sunset or star gazing sails. The captain and crew of Jeanie B can put you at the helm of the 72′ vessel, allow you and your friends to raise her sails and navigate along the Pamlico River or just sit back and enjoy the peaceful sail of an afternoon or evening.
To celebrate the arrival of Schooner Jeanie B, the City of Washington, NC welcomes her March 21 – 24 with an array of activities. Jeanie B will arrive in Washington on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 21 and that evening a lecture entitled, “Equinox, Solstice, Hallmark and Hershey. A talk on astronomical events and how they merge with our lives” will be given by Dr. Lee Sutton, owner and operator of the schooner. Jeanie B teaches celestial navigation and her arrival, to coincide with the Vernal Equinox on March 21, couples that teaching to her new home. The lecture will take place at the North Carolina Estuarium along the Washington waterfront.

GOOD North Carolina Spring, 2012 Dockage Deals

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 03-12-2012

McCotters Marina, Washington, NCRiver DunesDuring the week of March 5, I undertook a marina hopping research trip covering most of the pleasure craft facilties from Elizabeth City to Beaufort, North Carolina. As usual, I took a detailed, on site, up close and personal look at all these faculties, and have already fed all the information I gathered into the Net’s “North Carolina Marina Directory.”
Along the way, I discovered two outstanding spring, 2012 dockage deals being offered by two SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSORS!
First, let me mention McCotters Marina, located off the AICW, on the northern shores of Pamlico River, guarding the shores of (one of many in NC) Broad Creek, just a stone’s throw from Washington, NC. As many of you know, this facility faced more that its share of challenges during 2011. First came a disastrous fire in January of 2011, which destroyed multiple craft, and heavily damaged others. Then, this past fall, Hurricane Irene destroyed all the marina’s covered slips (boat houses).

Some of McCotters Marina's New Docks

Well, Captain Mark Henley and his fine staff have responded magnificently. The docks are largely rebuilt (see attached photo), and to celebrate this happy event, the marina HAS JUST LOWERED ITS TRANSIENT DOCKAGE RATES TO $1.00 PER FOOT, PER NIGHT! Now, cruisers have more reason than ever to leave the familiar confines of the AICW, and journey upstream to McCotters Marina, and the nearby community of Washington, NC (also a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!). So, if the opportunity presents itself, PLEASE visit McCotters Marina and support Captain Mark and his rebuilding effort. You could scarcely patronize a more appreciative bunch!

Then, just to the south of bit, I called on my good friends at River Dunes Marina, off the Neuse River, and on the shores of yet another Broad Creek (near AICW Statute Mile 173.5). Any of you who have already visited River Dunes know what a top drawer and utterly unique place this entire development is among all the facilities from Norfolk, VA to Key West, FL. You have only to take one look at the on-site club house, largely constructed from materials rescued from historic structures, or their state of the art shower building, not to mention the sumptuous homes surround the harbor, to understand that good fortune was smiling upon your vessel when a course was set for River Dunes.
I had the good fortune to meet with Director of Marketing, Ms. Sherwood Crawford, and Director of
Operations for the Harbor Club, Captain J. C. Cappelman. JC informed me that River Dunes has decided to extend their winter transient dockage rate of $1.00 per foot, per night, to May 24, 2012. WOW, what a deal. Don’t DARE miss a stop at River Dunes. It would be a bargain at double the price!
So, here are the happy facts (“just the facts, Mam) on two excellent marinas that both year round NC cruisers, and spring snowbirds will want to be sure to include in their cruising itinerary. Follow the links below for additional information, and to view both facilities on a Chart View page.

We visited both marinas in October 2011. River Dunes was delightful, just as you described. McCotters was still in bad shape after the fire and hurricane. I am glad to hear it is doing much better now. We’ll have to give it another try this year.

McCotters Marina Update (Feb. 2012) – off the AICW on Pamlico River, near Washington, NC

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 02-16-2012

McCotters Marina, Washington, NCThe year of 2011 was a real challenge for one of our favorite marinas along the central North Carolina coastline. In January (2011), a disastrous boat fire swept through part of McCotters Marina, destroying any number of vessels. Many of you subsequently participated in the Cruisers’ Recovery Fund sponsored jointly by the Salty Southeast Cruisers’ Net and Waterway Guide, to help bring relief to those whose boats were lost or heavily damaged. And, that fund raising effort was a RESOUNDING SUCCESS!
Then, as mentioned below, in August, Hurricane Irene rained more destruction on this facility! Two of the remaining covered slips/boathouses were destroyed.
Well, things have really looked up since then for this SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!!! Check out all the many improvements and recovery efforts described below, and then, PLEASE, whenever possible, patronize this facility. Captain Mark Henley, marina owner, and his fine staff will make you feel more than welcome!

McCotters Marina Update
February 2012
McCotters Marina is better than ever! Even though 2011 presented some challenges for this North Carolina landmark our full service marina and boat yard is bouncing back stronger than ever.
As many of you may know a boat fire in January spread to the docks, destroying the North Boat House that had stood watch over Broad Creek for over a half century. Then hurricane “Irene” stormed through in August claiming the two remaining boat houses. These two events brought an end the “boat house era” at McCotters.
Through it all the McCotters Crew has continued to serve the boating community providing dockage, on-land storage, boat repair, maintenance, custom canvas and sails, sail repair, rigging, boat brokerage and a ships store.
Going forward McCotters will be in the unique position of offering the regions most experienced repair and maintenance crew combined with new docks. We are excited to report that three of the four docks are already open and construction of the fourth dock is well under way with completion within weeks.
The McCotters crew wishes to thank its many loyal customers for their continued support over the last year and invites boating friends old and new to come be a part of the rebirth going on at McCotters.
New slips available on a first come first served basis. Come see us!
Mark Henley

Washington, NC Harbor District Alliance Announces Dates For 2012 Marine Market

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 12-13-2011

Whether you want to revisit the past or satisfy your curiosities, discover the arts or explore your true nature, you can do it from the heart of the Inner Banks - Washington, North Carolina. 800 546 0Isn’t it just WONDERFUL to contemplate April weather along the North Carolina coastline, here, “deep in December” when the cold winds blow! We cannot recommend this even too highly so PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Washington, NC is a long-time and much valued SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!!!!

Washington Harbor District Alliance announces dates for 2012 Marine Market
Washington, NC…. Mark your calendars for the 2nd annual Washington Marine Market to be held on Saturday, April 28th. This year’s market will be a one day event with added attractions and expanded hours.
The Washington Harbor District Alliance (WHDA) is pleased to bring this popular event back to downtown Washington. We will have a marine flea market, used boat corral, new boat show, and an artist market. Beth Byrd, Executive Director of WHDA said, “The Washington Harbor District Alliance saw a niche that was not being filled. Beaufort County has strong ties to the marine industry. Our citizens are lucky to live on the nations’ 2nd largest estuarine system. That means there are great numbers of consumers and vendors for this type of an event. What better place to stage the market than our beautiful downtown harbor district?”
“This year’s event has a wonderful addition to the lineup,” Byrd goes on to explain. “We are very excited to announce that the Beaufort County Arts Council will present the BOCO Music Festival on the same day”. The BOCO (short for Beaufort County) Music Festival offers a full line-up of very talented musicians. “We hope everyone will join us for this exciting event.”
Past participants will be back including the NC Estuarium, Park Boat Company, and The Carolinas Chapter of the Antique Outboard Motor Club. Great fresh seafood and land lubber grub will be available during the market. The always popular roving pirates and George and Martha Washington will be back for those photo-ops!
Vendors or flea market participants can register early by contacting WHDA at whda@washingtononthewater.com.

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 09-13-2011

McCotters Marina, Washington, NCOur good friend, Captain Mark  Henley, owner and operator of SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, McCotters Marina, has asked us to let the cruising community know that their on-site repair yard is up, running and fully functional, after some rough handling from Hurricane Irene. And, while this facility suffered some dock damage, power has been restored to one pier, and transients are being accepted. So, whenever possible, please patronize this excellent marina, which is a true friend of the cruising community.

Praise for Carolina Wind Yachting Center, upstream on the Pamlico River off the AICW in Washington, NC

Posted by Larry | Posted on 08-30-2011

Carolina Wind Yachting Center is located on the north banks of the Pamlico River just upstream of the Washington City Docks.

I was a live-aboard at Carolina Winds (Haven’s Warf) in 1995-1996. Wonderful town and great people. The staff at Carolina Winds are fantastic and know their stuff. Your only major challenges to the town are the railroad bridge. When I lived there, the bridge was “hand cranked”, so if the wind was blowing, they could not get it open.
Line Dempsey

Editor’s Note – Carolina Wind Yachting Center suffered damage from Hurricane Irene. Be sure to call ahead and check on services availability before committing to a plan which call for coiling your lines here!

Anchoring Restriction, Bath Creek, 16.2 Nautical Miles off the AICW on Pamlico River

Posted by Larry | Posted on 08-12-2011

Bath Creek Anchorage lies on the centerline of Bath Creek, north of marker #4 and south of the the fixed, 13-foot Bath Creek Bridge in Bath, NC. Bath Creek itself cuts into the southern shores of the Pamlico River, between the AICW and Washington, NC.
This is the very first we have heard about any sort of anchorage time restriction on these waters, or most any other North Carolina waters for that matter. If ANYONE has more info on this time limit, PLEASE click the “Comment on This Posting/Marina/Anchorage/Bridge” link below, and share your information

I was told that there is a town ordinance prohibiting anchoring longer than one week in Bath Creek. I left my boat on the hook there for two weeks and was threatened with a “violation” by some town official. Paul Minor at Bath Creek Marina was nice enough to come out and warn me.
Doug Bond

Is this even legal??? Never heard of this before.

Report on Upper Goose Creek Anchorage on the Pamlico River, 17 Miles off the AICW

Posted by Larry | Posted on 07-22-2011

Upper Goose Creek Anchorage lies due north of Pamlico River’s, Blounts Bay marker #8. Cruisers’ Net does not recommend that cruising size craft enter this creek. It has an unmarked shoal surrounding the entrance. Only adventurous captains using a GPS chartplotter should attempt entrance and ONLY then if they are willing to risk finding the bottom! Obviously Skipper Keith is a risk-taker who loves to explore. (See Swanquarter posting.) Do not confuse this Upper Goose Creek with the “Upper Goose Creek Anchorage” off the Neuse River as found in our NC Anchorage Directory.

I just took my 4 1/2 foot draft sailboat well up into Goose Creek State Park (between Bath and Washington) and never touched bottom even with the wind tide about 1 foot low. I anchored near a primitive campground which has a small dock that I could row to for water and a bathroom. It was a GREAT spot.
Y’all take care and thanks for the great website.
Skipper Keith Sullivan aboard S/V Saga

Washington, NC City Docks Now a “Clean Marina” (Pamlico River, off the AICW)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 07-21-2011

Whether you want to revisit the past or satisfy your curiosities, discover the arts or explore your true nature, you can do it from the heart of the Inner Banks - Washington, North Carolina. 800 546 0We had an earlier notice here on the Cruisers’ Net that SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, Washington, NC City Docks, is now a “Clean Marina.” Below, you will find the official press release announcing this new distinction.

N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources
Release: Immediate
Contact: Michele Walker
Date: July 6, 2011
Phone: 919-715-4074

Washington Waterfront Docks Certified as a North Carolina Clean Marina
RALEIGH – The Washington Waterfront Docks in Washington, N.C. is the latest facility to be certified as a North Carolina Clean Marina, a designation given to marinas that go beyond minimum regulatory requirements.
The Clean Marina program illustrates how marina operators can help safeguard the environment by using management and operation techniques that exceed environmental requirements. To earn the certification, the marina’s owners prepare spill prevention plans and conduct safety and emergency planning. Marina operators also control boat maintenance activities to protect water quality.
Clean Marina is a voluntary program that began in the summer of 2000. Marina operators who choose to participate must complete an evaluation form about their use of specific best management practices. If a marina meets criteria developed by the Division of Coastal Management, it will be designated as a Clean Marina. Such marinas are eligible to fly the Clean Marina flag and use the logo in their advertising. The flags signal to boaters that a marina cares about the cleanliness of area waterways.
Clean Marina is a nationwide program developed by the National Marine Environmental Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to clean up waterways for better recreational boating. The foundation encourages states to adapt Clean Marina principles to fit their own needs.
The North Carolina program is a partnership between the Division of Coastal Management, N.C. Boating Industry Services, the N.C. Marine Trade Association, the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Program, N.C. Sea Grant, the U.S. Power Squadron, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and N.C. Big Sweep.

Good Words for Residents of Washington, NC, off the AICW on the Pamlico River

Whether you want to revisit the past or satisfy your curiosities, discover the arts or explore your true nature, you can do it from the heart of the Inner Banks - Washington, North Carolina. 800 546 0The Washington City Docks, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!, is about 24 nautical miles west of the AICW up the Pamlico River.

We spent a couple of pleasant days at the Washington waterfront docks last on a short cruise from our home port of Oriental. Washington is a nice town, and the people are absolutely fantastic. Blew out half my mainsail luff slides on the way up; nice slip renter on the dock took me up to West Marine (thanks Scott!!), but they didn’t have any. Called Pacific Seacraft (relocated here from CA in 2007) and the owner, Steve Brodie, brought some to the docks; when they didn’t fit, he took me the 9 miles to McCotter’s to get some. How do you quantify that?

Update on Planned Transient Slips Expansion at the City Docks in Washington, NC, Pamlico River

Posted by Larry | Posted on 03-03-2011

Whether you want to revisit the past or satisfy your curiosities, discover the arts or explore your true nature, you can do it from the heart of the Inner Banks - Washington, North Carolina. 800 546 0The city of Washington, NC, a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, already has an impressive set of municipal berths . Construction will continue in the fall on an even larger facility!

The planned construction of 14 additional transient slips at the Washington, NC City Docks has been delayed until this fall due to difficulties experienced in driving new pilings and a summer long moratorium on construction in the Pamlico River and Sound intended to protect fish migration and spawning. Construction crews ran into an unexpected layer of hard bottom that impeded driving of the new 50 ft pilings required, and were unable to complete the pilings before the 2/28 start of the moratorium.
The planned addition of slips will start at the end of the moratorium in September. The 14 additional slips will range from 25′ X 14′ slips up to 45′ X 24′ slips that can accomodate many cruising catamarans. The project will also include upgrades to the electrical pedestals, new fire mains, and redecking of the docks.
The City Docks currently have 10 35′ x 16′ transient slips with 6′ to 19′ of water depth that include power and water in the $1.25/ft transient fee. There are also 400 ft of bulkhead docks that are no cost for the first two nights, and $0.75/ft after that. All slips include access to air conditiond heads and showers located on the waterfront.
There is also a mooring field off the waterfront with access to heads and showers. Moorings are designed for boats to 50′, and nightly rental is $15. The city has made an arrangement with a local business (about 3/4 nm from the docks and with 8′ of depth alongside) to provide diesel fuel to boaters.
The Washington City Docks are about 24 nm west of the ICW in the Pamlico River. Approximate Lat/Lon are 36-30.5N and 77- 00.1W.

Praise for Bath Harbor Marina in Bath Creek off the Pamlico River departing the AICW at Statute Mile 146

Bath Creek is on the north side of Pamlico River opposite flashing marker #5, approximately 8 miles west of the AICW. From the Waterway, turn west at flashing marker “PR” at Wades Point. Located on the east side of Bath Creek, Bath Harbor Marina is just below Hwy. 92/99 fixed bridge.

We were on the tail end of a cruising week and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere at Bath Marina. They were very accommodating and there is not a better deal on the water.

Washington, NC City Docks (Pamlico River)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 07-23-2009

On 7/23/09, as part of a “North Carolina Wish List,” I posed the following question:

30. Finally, cruisers can continue up Pamlico River to the very nice Washington, NC city docks (a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR). These are some of the nicest city facilities in North Carolina. Anyone who has berthed here, please share what you found. Did you find any good places to eat or places to shop in downtown Washington?

Responses follow:

Enjoyed Washington, NC. Bought a new 8D battery at West Marine and one of the employees delivered in his truck. No charge and wouldn’t accept a tip!
Wayne Thomas

Washington is great.  Several restaurants. The Map Room has excellent food with a creative flair.  We were fortunate to be there on a Friday night when the town had bands of every type playing in the streets.  Nice town dock.  West Marine within walking distance.
Rick

Washington City Dock permits you to tie up for 2 days every 7 days free of charge – no power or water. Docking is $260 a month and I believe now plus power cost (which was included when I was there) There are great showers free of charge and a waterside boardwalk and park. Mimis Coffee House on the waterfront is a great place to eat fine home made soups and other specials. (Owners Mimi and Pete at one time were cruisers themselves) . The Metro (I think it’s called) serves a good old fashioned breakfast. Good Farmers Market every Saturday in summer time. All Dockmasters very friendly. Walmart / Lowes / Office Depot et al are a $5 taxi ride away. West Marine is within walking distance

Visiting Bath, NC (Pamlico River)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 07-23-2009

On 7/23/09, as part of a “North Carolina Wish List,” I posed the following question:

28. Farther up the Pamlico River, Bath Creek cuts into the northern banks. This well marked body of water leads to Bath, officially North Carolina’s oldest incorporated town. Here, you can tie up to free state docks, or a nice, smaller private marina. Who has visited Bath in the last several years? Where do you berth? Did you find anyplace to eat ashore in Bath?

Responses follow:

Dock was full so attempted to anchor, bottom must be very soft. Finally set Fortress after Delta and SuperMax kept sliding along.

We docked at state dock during election last November during nor’easter, Bath is a lovely town. There’s a pizza place very nearby and it was tasty. They also had some cheese biscuits for breakfast, but otherwise not many choices. Rarely is there better food than can be found in this farmer’s galley, though.

We have been to Bath 6 times in the last year and I’m going back next week.  It is my favorite place in NC.  Edenton is a close second.  We’ve used the town dock and anchored out.  My blood pressure drops 40 points as soon as my feet hit shore.  This town is so perfect. I nice restaurant called Blackbeards is mostly Italian stuff.  And ice cream!  Very good food.

Bath Creek – delightful. And the free dock excellent. Nothing much there however in terms of stores except one pizza restaurant – which is quite good however. I hear that Fortune 500 magazine recommended Bath as one of the top ten places in America to build a multi million dollar home……… Grocery stores etc too far away for boaters

McCotters Marina, Washington, NCMcCotters Marina and Repair Yard is located on Broad Creek, a few miles downstream of the Washington, NC waterfront. McCotters is one of the largest marinas in North Carolina, and its repair capabilities, as you will see below, are impressive. And, they are a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!

Hello Claiborne:
Just want to let you and everyone know that we just had some repair work done at McCotters Marina in Washington, NC. We could not be happier with the work, Everything was finished on time, and the price was fair. That’s a good recommendation for any repair yard. These good folks receive our hightest recommendation.
