      President’s Message

We’re excited to see the Gulfport Arts Center coming together, and looking forward to assembling our steering committee to work towards our grand reopening. Interested in shaping the future of the “arts for all” initiatives at the Gulfport Arts Center? Email us and let us know you want to be part of the steering committee.

Lots of great things are on tap at the Gulfport History Museum, too – we’re getting ready for our lowcountry shrimp boil May 20 as well as our annual members meeting. We’re excited to welcome some new board members as we grow. In June, we’re bringing back our “So You Think You Know Gulfport?” irreverent history quiz show – this time with cash prizes! – and in July, we have another Gulfport Stories interview.

We’d love to have you support us, either with your time, talents, or wallet. Email us about volunteering either of the first two, or make a donation to support our mission – which is to preserve and celebrate Gulfport culture and history through exhibits and programs that educate and inspire the community and visiting public – today.

      See you soon!

Communities rally around each other during times of war and Gulfport is no different. Here we see residents flocking to the third casino constructed on this location in Gulfport for a war drive rally in 1944. The wartime casino often featured USO rallies, war bond drives and other patriotic celebrations that united the region and supported the local soldiers fighting overseas. An “Honor Roll” sign listed the names of all Gulfportians who were currently serving in World War II. A 1950 renovation altered the facade of this casino to its present appearance. St. Petersburg’s municipal streetcar line terminated in front of the casino for over 44 years before its tracks were removed in late 1949.

The Gulfport Historical Society needs the community to rally once more, as we are in dire need of volunteers. If you want to do your part in the effort to preserve and promote Gulfport’s history, please contact us to see how you can help!

Lift Station No.2 Installation and Improvements

The City of Gulfport continues to invest in new infrastructure to move wastewater more efficiently through the system, minimize the potential for wet weather overflows and protect the environment. The Lift Station No.2 Force Main Installation and Improvement Project involves designing, permitting and updating the lift station in the Municipal Marina area. It also includes a new underground pipeline to connect both City of Gulfport lift stations to the City of St. Petersburg system for treatment and disposal. Beginning Monday, February 28, 2022, construction will occur at Lift Station No.2 site and along the pipeline route. There will be temporary construction impacts, including:

      • Temporary closure at 53rd Street South and 31st Avenue South, extending eastward along 31st Avenue South to Tradewinds Drive, and Del Rio Way, then northward along Tifton Street South to 29th Avenue South.
      • Lane closures on 31st Avenue South.
      • Impeded driveway access on 31st Avenue South during horizontal directional drill pipe installation (long segments of fused pipe will be strung along the roadway).
      • Increased construction traffic near the lift station site and near pipeline construction.
      • Construction activity, traffic, noise and minor vibration Monday through Friday; some night or weekend work may be required to reduce impacts to the community.

City Councilmember, Ward I Representative, April Thanos will hold a town hall meeting. Members of the community, media, and the public are invited to participate.

“Everyone knows parking is an issue in Gulfport. The question is what can be done? Should we charge for parking? How about timed parking? Can we encourage waterfront employees to park off Beach Boulevard? There are loads of public parking areas not close to Beach Boulevard. How can we get visitors to park there? Our town is renowned for its bike- and walkability; do we need to make it safer and more convenient?

Our residents are a talented bunch with concerns and ideas; I will hear them and discuss the alternatives. By having many people involved, we are bound to come up with ways to make our downtown even more enjoyable and prosperous. Please join the conversation,” said City Councilmember, April Thanos.

      The Mullet Wrapper

      Vol. #9 Issue #1
Let’s Make 2022 One for the History Books

Happy New Year! I think I speak for all of us when I say we’re hoping for a relatively … uneventful… 2022.

That’s not to say we won’t have events – we have plenty on tap for 2022, and we’re excited to see everyone again. We continue to practice safety protocols at the museum: regular cleaning, of course, and we have masks and sanitizer available for all our guests. We do not require masks for fully vaccinated guests, but even if you’re fully vaccinated and want to wear a mask, that’s fine by us – we recognize many people want to wear masks, so we’re leaving it at your discretion. Whatever it takes to make you feel good about attending our porch parties and other events, because we want to see you in 2022!

So how can you see us in January? I’m so glad you asked! Just before we zoomed into lockdown in 2020, we held our inaugural “Gulfport Stories” live oral history event with former Gulfport mayor, Yvonne Johnson. We’re pleased to resume these this month with another living Gulfport legend: Dawn Fisher. Dawn’s a former councilmember, but in more recent times people know her because they see her around the city picking up litter. She’s an amazing woman with a rich history, and I hope you’ll take the chance this month to hear her story – and, if you’d like, ask her a few questions of your own.

We have lots more happening, too – stop by and check out our new hours (Thurs.-Sat., 10 a.m.-2 p.m.) and come see us at the Gulfport Tuesday Market. We’ll be at 31st Avenue and Beach Boulevard South every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. (Also, we’d love new volunteers to work with us during those times. It’s fun – why not sign up for a shift?) Thank you all for supporting our history, and we look forward to a fruitful and historic (but in a good way!) 2022!

Join Gulfport Historical Society for the August edition of our Florida Summer Cinema Series!

This month’s movie tells the story of Jack Chester, a stressed-out air traffic controller who goes on vacation with his family. Things don’t exactly go as planned, and a final showdown between Jack and the owner of his dubious rental property takes place, of course, as a boat race! Much of the film was shot in St. Pete and several local landmarks make an appearance, including the old St. Petersburg Pier and the old Sunshine Skyway. This film is rated PG.

Pack a picnic, bring chairs, and join us for the screening on the back lawn of the Gulfport History Museum. Doors open at 7:30, film begins at sunset. This event is free and open to the public.

We offer a huge thanks to Ken Simmons, a wonderful supporter of Gulfport Historical Society, who is sponsoring our August film.

The Atlantic basin hurricane season begins June 1. Getting prepared for any type of disaster is a simple matter and it starts with knowing what you will need to do. It’s the first step to keeping yourself and your family safe.

    • Goodbye 2020, Hello 2021! Gulfport Historical Society, Gulfport, FL

Gulfport Marina includes dry boat storage, ship store, bathroom, public boat ramp, parking, fueling stations, lighted range markers and guest docking facility.

During the pandemic, the Gulfport Historical Society continues its educational activities for the City of Gulfport, home to Gulfport Municipal Marina, A CRUISERS NET SPONSOR, located on the northern shores of Boca Ciega Bay and easily accessible from the Western Florida ICW, just north of Tampa Bay.

A New Years Message to Our Members

      Dear Gulfport Historical Society Members,

Well, it’s been quite a year!

While most of us will be happy enough to see the end of 2020, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on what we as a community have been able to accomplish, even in difficult times.

2020 started strong with two porch parties that packed the house—one honoring Gulfport’s first woman mayor, Mayor Yvonne Johnson, and another featuring research on Flamingo Tour ’20 homes presented by one of our outstanding volunteers, John Avery. And, of course, we wagged in five new elected “pawficers” through our first-ever Pet Mayor competition. (By the way, due to the smaller number of live events we hosted this year, we have decided to extend their terms for another year, giving them a few more opportunities to represent our four-legged constituency. But we do plan to hold another pet election in 2022!)

Then COVID hit, and, like everyone else, we had to rethink how we did just about everything. We had to close the museum, but we found new ways to reach our community through virtual Florida Snapshots presentations on everything from local shell mounds to Florida food traditions to Florida’s natural history. We brought you back to the museum—just outside, on the lawn—for socially distanced porch parties, celebrating Gulfport’s spirit of volunteerism alongside Gulfport Votes 100% and hearing fabulous tales of the early settlers of Pinellas County from Erik Anderson. With the help of our fantastic volunteers, we also worked to get the Gulfport Arts Center ready to become a hub for local artists and arts classes that will help us fully engage our mission to celebrate Gulfport’s history and culture.

We are looking forward to the year to come! As the pandemic situation begins to improve, we plan to reopen the museum in February and launch our first programs at the Gulfport Arts Center. We are working on another year of great porch parties, both virtual and in person, to bring our community together for fellowship and learning. And, as ever, our walking tours, offered every third Saturday of the month, remain a great way to get to know Gulfport’s unique history.

Your support makes all of this possible. Please consider donating to the Gulfport History Society. Giving is easy—you can do it online here—and every bit helps us keep on preserving and celebrating the history of the town we all love.

Wishing you all a happy new year!

Families with children will be placed in family shelters on cold nights. Families should call 2-1-1, Tampa Bay Cares, Inc., for information about family shelters.

“Working at a homeless cold weather shelter on Christmas night is a unique and wonderful thing,” said Lauren Wolf, who coordinates the program with Cliff Smith. “This is neighbors helping neighbors and is the ultimate expression of the Christmas spirit.”

This giving spirit is present year-round for the volunteers, organizers and faith-based and community centers who open their doors to serve our houseless neighbors. However, this year is especially challenging due to COVID-19. Fewer volunteers are able to help, while more are required for temperature checks and distribution of face masks and sanitizer. With the number of homeless residents on the rise, social distancing requiring more physical space, and cleaning and safety protocols, covering basic expenses has become an even bigger challenge.

“We are grateful to a community that is always willing to support those in need,” said the program’s co-coordinator Cliff Smith. “At this time when all faiths come together during a season of giving, we are hoping for continued support and assistance to continue helping our most vulnerable individuals.”

Pinellas residents, businesses urged to follow mask ordinance
      as COVID cases rise
Local State of Emergency extended through Dec. 11

      • COVID-19 cases are rising rapidly in Pinellas, threatening hospital capacity and vulnerable residents
      • Sheriff’s Office announces additional compliance efforts at bars, restaurants and other businesses
      • Residents urged to mask up and practice social distancing in public to stop the spread

With COVID-19 cases reaching levels not seen since the summer, Pinellas County leaders are urging businesses and residents to follow the local protocols requiring face coverings at indoor public places and social distancing to stop the spread of the virus.

Over the past month, new cases per day have tripled and the percentage of people testing positive has doubled, reaching 8.4 percent on November 29 compared to 4.2 percent on October 30. Patients on ventilators have also nearly doubled in that time, from 32 to 57. Increases in deaths typically lag one to two weeks behind increases in new cases.

The County’s local ordinance remains in place, but an increasing number of people ignoring the mask rule at bars and other businesses, combined with flu season and holiday gatherings, are expected to cause a further spike in cases through the end of the year.

The Sheriff’s Office is placing new signage at local businesses to remind staff and patrons of the protocol and will follow up at those businesses reported to be consistently violating the ordinance.

Pinellas County Administrator Barry A. Burton and Sheriff Bob Gualtieri were joined by County Commission Chair Pat Gerard, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard at a Thursday news conference to underscore a new countywide push for stronger compliance.

“We want to stay open and we want to stay safe. We want our businesses to thrive and we want to help them in doing these simple measures to keep everybody safe so we can continue to operate just as we are,” Burton said.

Deputies recently traveled around the county and found 40 percent of bars and 8 percent of restaurants in violation of the ordinance, including staff not wearing masks, Sheriff Gualtieri said.

“These things are required by law. Wearing a mask is not fun, but the alternative is worse,” he said.

“Fines and penalties are not suspended for businesses, so if we have to go down that path, we can. We don’t want to. We need the businesses, again, to help us help you – to help the community,” he said.

Continuing to mask up in public and practice social distancing is the only option for eliminating the virus, protecting people and keeping businesses open until a vaccine is widely available, which isn’t expected until next year, according to federal health officials.

Face masks have been proven effective in reducing the number of new COVID-19 cases, both in the Tampa Bay area and nationwide.

Burton and Gualtieri are hosting a Facebook Live Event on Friday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. to answer questions about the new countywide compliance effort.

Pinellas County has also extended its State of Local Emergency for COVID-19 through December 11. The extension was issued by County Administrator Barry A. Burton by delegated authority from the Board of County Commissioners.

The extension keeps in effect a County ordinance requiring face coverings within public places, and restaurants and bars to serve only patrons who are seated. Public health officials continue to closely monitor the 7-day rolling averages for new COVID-19 cases, percentage of positive tests, hospitalizations and hospital bed capacity.
