Island/Roanoke River Anchorage – Navigational Detail

Above Plymouth, the Roanoke is soon divided by a long, oval-shaped island. The main channel continues along the island’s southerly quarter and borders a pulp mill. The northerly cut holds 6-foot depths behind the island and makes an excellent spot to drop the hook.
The two branches rejoin at the island’s westerly tip, where the southwesterly mouth of the Middle River makes into the Roanoke’s northerly shore. Do not attempt to cruise through this mouth of Middle River, even by dinghy. It is foul with all sorts of underwater debris.
