Upstream Scuppernong River Anchorage – Navigatonal Detail

To enter the Scuppernong River from Albemarle Sound, set course to come abeam of the entrance’s outer channel marker, marker #1SR, to its fairly immediate southwesterly side. Once abeam of #1SR, adjust your course to the southeast and point to pass markers #2 and #2A to their immediate northeasterly sides. To maintain minimum 7- to 8-foot depths, be sure to hug #2 and #2A closely. Any slippage to the northeast can land you in 4½- to 5-foot depths.
From #2A, continue on the same course, pointing to come abeam of marker #3 to its fairly immediate southwesterly side. Upstream of #3, the channel becomes quite wide and holds 8 feet or better all the way to Columbia.
Set course from #3 to come abeam of marker #4 to its northerly side. These two beacons are 1.5 nautical miles apart, and you must watch carefully to catch sight of #4. Upriver from #4, be on guard for partially submerged snags and fishing stakes.
Just upstream of marker #7, the river takes a sharp bend to the east. Point to pass the next upriver aid to navigation, marker #8, to its northern side.
From #8, simply follow the river’s mid-width as the Scuppernong winds its way toward Columbia. You will pass marker #10 to its northerly side along the way. Keep a sharp watch for snags and fishing stakes on both shores. As you approach Columbia Bridge, the town waterfront will come abeam to port.
