[EXPIRED] FEC RR Bridge in Jacksonville NOW OPEN, St. Johns River
This cantankerous railway bridge in the heart of Jacksonville has been locked down since November 14, but repairs have been completed (for now!) and navigation can return to normal. See Lockdown of FEC RR Bridge in Jacksonville, November 14-21, 2014, St. Johns River.
This good news article by Joe Daraskevich in the Florida Times Union comes to us from our good friends Chuck Baier and Susan Landry of Beach House Publications
Boat traffic on the St. Johns River was free to pass at the Florida East Coast Railway bridge Thursday for the first time in almost a week.
The bridge was raised at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, more than a day earlier than the railway company expected.
The railway beside the Acosta Bridge has a counterweight that normally keeps the deck raised unless a train is crossing but it had to be lowered over the last week while the company completed repairs, preventing boat traffic from passing through on the river.
The bridge was lowered Nov. 14 about 8 a.m. and was supposed to be down until 6 p.m. Friday.
