Whether by plan or by chance, December 18 will not be a good day for cruisers on the upper Waterway. See link below for information on the Norfolk-Portsmouth RR Bridge closure on the same day. If you are traveling north, this might be a good time to explore Elizabeth City, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!, and the Dismal Swamp Canal which has had recent debris removal and dredging.

VA/NC – GREAT BRIDGE TO ALBEMARLE SOUND – ATLANTIC INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY (AICW) – GREAT BRIDGE LOCK CLOSURE
The lock at Great Bridge , Chesapeake, VA will be closed to navigation between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM on Tuesday 18 December, 2012 for removal of debris on the lock floor. Vessels desiring to transit the AICW during the closure may use the Alternate Route of the Dismal Swamp Canal, Route 2. The controlling depth of the Canal is 6.0 feet. The Dismal Swamp locking hours are 8:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM. The lock and bridge monitor VHF-FM channels 13 and 16 . Chart: 12206.
