To continue upstream to the Hertford swing bridge, set course to pass unlighted daybeacons #9 and #11 to their fairly immediate northerly sides. Depths of 8 feet or more can be expected here, but south of the two aids, shoal water extends outward from the shore.
From #11, swing to the south and point to pass through the swinging span of the Hertford Bridge. The bridge has a closed vertical clearance of only 7 feet but opens on demand from 8:00 A.M. until midnight between April 1 and September 30. From October 1 through March 31, it opens on signal from 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. After you pass through the bridge, the charming Hertford waterfront will come abeam to port.
Once through the Hertford Bridge, favor the starboard (western) shore. Depths of 8 feet can be expected here. The port shore, which fronts onto some private residences and the Hertford launching park, carries only 4½ feet of water.
Follow the narrowing stream until it flows through a hairpin turn to the north. After you come out of the turn, a long, straight stretch of water will open out before you.
From the sharp turn to the railroad bridge about a mile upstream, typical depths range from 7 to 20 feet. These waters are quite sheltered and offer an excellent spot to anchor. A small railroad bridge with a vertical clearance of only 3 feet blocks travel farther upstream for all but the smallest craft. Consider a quick trip through by dinghy, however, for some beautiful natural scenery and excellent bass fishing.
