Subject: Julia Tuttle Bridge
Message: The Julia Tuttle Bridge at ICW mile 1087.1 has a height of 56 feet. It restricts passage of boats with taller masts between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. What is the best way to navigate past this restriction? Can one go outside at Port Everglades and go back inside at Port of Miami?
I have made this bypass several times without a problem. In fact, you might want to consider ducking outside earlier – say at Lake Worth Inlet, and avoid many bridge delays. The last time I did this, I kept track of others calling for bridge openings heading south and found that I had saved several hours at the end of the day. When you get to Miami, don't be surprised if you find the main channel at Government Cut restricted to private vessels – just use Lummus Cut on the south side of Dodge Island to get back to the ICW. By the way, you'll find an extra foot of clearance, with 8' depth, on either side of the center span at the Julia Tuttle Bridge.
