Intersection of AICW and Browns Inlet
Statute Mile 237, North Carolina AICW
The Problem: The AICW waters from the Waterway’s intersection with shallow Browns Inlet to a point just north of the Onslow Bridge, have been shoaling badly for only the last several years. In spite of dredging in 2012, MLW depths in certain sections of this problem stretch have now deteriorated to less than 3 feet at MLW!
Shoaling is particularly prominent on the seaward side of the channel between markers #61A and #60. See advice below on the best way to handle this situation.
The Solution: It is now all but mandatory to cruise this section of the AICW at mid to (preferably) high tide.
Markers #60 and #61, as of 5/29/14, will appear to be almost in a straight line as you make your approach. What you must do is “zig-zag, by passing to #60 to its southeastern side, and then take #61A to its northwestern quarter.
SLOW DOWN and proceed though this stretch of markers at MAXIMUM ALERT!
