[EXPIRED] March at Dismal Swamp State Park, AICW Alternate Route
Dismal Swamp State Park is getting back into full swing as they recover from massive flooding and closure due to Hurricane Matthew. The canal is still closed to navigation, but the State Park is continuing programs as weather permits.

Below are the programs we have at the park for March. There is no public program this weekend, but we have some great ones coming up! Wagon Rides are returning on Sundays at 11 am and 2 pm each Sunday starting March 26 through late May.
Spring Paddle
Sat, 03/11/2017 – 1:00pm, Boat Launch
Join the ranger for a leisurely paddle on the historic Dismal Swamp Canal! All ages and skill levels are welcome–instruction will be provided if needed. Everything you need- boat, paddle, PFD- is included. The trip will be limited to 8 boats, so call the office at 252-771-6593 to reserve your spot!

Ride with the Ranger: Earn the Burn

If you haven’t visited the site of the 2011 fire, here’s your chance to get out and see it on a guided bike ride! Children and novice bikers are welcome, but this trip could be considered moderately difficult. Plan for about 4-5 hours of ride time over trails that are flat but rocky, sandy, and/or muddy in spots along the way. Distance is approximately 16 miles round trip. There will be a lunch break at the halfway point: pack your own lunch and bring plenty of water. Insect repellent is recommended.
Park bikes are available and must be reserved in advance. It is highly recommended to bring your own bike if you have one. Please call the office at 252-771-6593 to pre-register for this program to help us plan.
Wagon Rides
Sun, 03/26/2017 – 11:00am & 2:00pm
Hop aboard the Dismal Swamp Express, an open-air wagon, for a 2-mile round trip, narrated ride along Canal Road. See the park’s liquor still and lighter boat replicas and maybe even some interesting birds or other wildlife! The ride lasts 45 minutes to an hour and is filled on a first come, first served basis. If the weather is questionable or you have a large group, please call the office at 252-771-6593 in advance. Insect repellent is recommended. Bring snacks and water if you want them.
