Recently stayed here for three nights. Tugs and boats leaving a wake is not the issue. A strong east winds (10 knots plus) and this is not the place to be. Other than that this marina is located well for walking and touring the city. If you bike go down East Bay St. and straight across the Hwy 17 Cooper River Bridge (protected bike/walking lane). Then you can take the boat taxi back if you like along with your bike straight to the Maritime Center. Nice round trip! Good views from top of bridge.
WE just spent two weeks here. This is a great place to stay. It is right in downtown Charleston and you can walk or take the free trolley just about anyplace. The price is right and the marina people are very friendly and helpful.
They provide free wi fi and laundry. There is only a single bathroom and that is only available during the marina hours.
Space is limited as the place has shoaled in pretty good so unless you draw almost no water most of the slips are not useable. The only drawback are the wakes from the many tugs and ships operating in the harbor.
So much to see and do and the Charleston Maritime Marina people were wonderful and worked with us. Our bikes came in handy and got to see a lot of the beautiful parks and history. There are definite ship wake issues. Fish is four blocks away, and the Harris Teeter is expensive, but has anything you could ask for. The Aquarium is right there and worth a visit. We’d tried more than once to get in. Last fall we were successful and secured two nights in November by calling a week in advance. Our experience there was positive. The staff was helpful. We didn’t find a problem with boat wakes, but we may be more tolerant than some. Harris Teeter was a short walk away and was a great place to provision. While I can’t name a particular restaurant, we’ve eaten at a few and found them to be really good. We enjoyed the short walk to the old marketplace and downtown. Have stayed at the Maritime Center marina 3 times, most recently June, 2012. It is my preferred marina in Charleston for the berthing rate and the great location for both groceries (H-T) and restaurants (many). The freighter and Navy traffic in the Cooper River can send a surge into the marina, but power boat wakes on the Ashley River can do the same for the marinas on that side of town. The marina has recently upgraded the free laundromat to two machine sets, so it is possible to get a complete laundry done in a reasonable amount of time. For me the only drawback to the marina is the limited number of slips, especially those for boats over 40′. The last two time I was at the marina I had to tie my 42′ sailboat to a 30′ floating dock. That’s not really a problem for me with a mid-ships lifeline gate. Boats with the gate further aft will want to back into one of these slips. If you are not comfortable tying to a 30′ dock, then make a reservation on one of the 40′ docks. My recommendation is to stay at the Maritime Center if you are going to spend some time in Charleston. If you are just stopping for a night on a forced march up or down the ICW, then by all means use the Ashley River marinas as they are much more convenient.

I would not go in to the Maritime Center on the Cooper River or the City Marina on the Ashley side at other than slack tide if I didn’t have to. The current can be quite swift in either. Lots of folks love the Maritime Center for its proximity to the Harris Teeter, the hardware store, and the dog park. It is also a shorter walk to the main part of town. We like the City Marina much better for a variety of reasons – the docks and the bath facilities, the friendly and helpful staff, the van which takes people downtown every hour on the hour and to West Marine (and an adjacent Harris Teeter) every day at 11:30 AM. The pumpout boat come to your boat pretty much on demand for $5. The dockage prices aren’t > that much higher than the Maritime Center, but the fuel prices aren’t cheap by any means. If you make a reservation ask to be on M dock near the bath house if possible. This shortens the walk to the parking lot. If you get at the end of the Megadock your shoes will get lots of wear during your stay. I would suggest you read the reviews of both places in Active Captain. Good luck! Wide open to tourist and the local tour boats operate out of there as well. If you stay six months put out every fender you have because it can get really rocky rolley in there with wakes coming into that small basin from the harbor and a wind from the wrong direction sends waves rolling in bouncing off the walls inside. Great Marina. Reasonable ($1.50 for BoatUS, deals on weekly and monthly), friendly, helpful staff. Close to very good grocery, city library, coffee shops, restaurants, gym, movie theater and walking distance to historic Charleston’s great old homes, Battery Park, good restaurants, galleries, museums, bus and trolley lines etc. Some pretty good surge on tide changes, but not unreasonable. Definitely the place to stay if you are passing through and want to see some of Charleston. City Marina on the other side is a little far out.

We stayed previously at City Marina aka: MegaDock on the other side of Charleston last year, nice facility, but too rich for our blood. Lots of big high end boats if you like walking the docks. The Maritime Center is more low key, less expensive, and only blocks away from things. There’s a Harris Teeter close by, an easy walk to a terrific grocery store. They have one of those RedBox DVD vending machines, my 1st encounter with one, and I’m hooked. A buck for a DVD rental. The Center may be a bit more exposed to passing wakes, and has more fetch in a NE wind, can get a bit rocky, but not always, and is much closer to town and the historic section, many restaurants if that’s your thing. We travel with dogs, and we found the folks there to be dog friendly, and there’s a huge field/park across the street, little traffic. Next door to the Aquarium, lots of interesting neighborhoods and beautiful old homes to see within easy walking. Staff was very accommodating, always offered to help with lines. BTW, best approach is in slack tide, second best is flood, ebb can go pretty quickly, and I’ve witnessed some folks having trouble with the current during docking. They’ll help you, there were 2 guys there to take our lines, and they were very helpful. Saw police on bike, by car at least once a day in the area during our stay, there are always lots of cruisers coming and going, so I’d guess it’s pretty secure, although not gated. 4 stars from me. We were at the Maritime Center end of Oct 09, rates were $1.60 ft with BostUS discount. The staff was great but we found the rolly situation very uncomfortable. The laundry is free but there is only one washer and dryer so don’t plan on getting all your laundry caught up unless you are there a long time. The walk to town is easy and Harris Teeter is wonderful. Great wine selection there as well.
Charleston Maritime Center has a good weekly rate, is convenient and lots of boats left there for several weeks.? Open to wakes from Harbor, but if you won’t be on board it won’t be a problem.?

There is a weekly rate. . There’s also a BoatUS discount on fuel. If you decide to go there, tell Jeff we said “Hi!” and will see him in November. The Maritime Center is near Harris-Teeter (grocery store), and walking distance to the Charleston Welcome Center and IMAX theater. It’s next door to the aquarium. It’s also easy to get to Patriot’s Point, where the Yorktown is moored, and a CG Cutter and a Viet Nam Memorial maritime museum complex. The Maritime Center is exposed to wakes from the Cooper River, and it’s somewhat choppier than the City Marina. But, there’s much less traffic in the area, and it’s far easier to get in and out. Last time we were in Charleston we stayed at the maritime center on the north side of the city across from patriots point and loved it. Closer to the city and $1.40 FT in April 09. GREAT grocery store nearby within walking distance, (Harris Tweeters). Close to bus line and much closer to walk to the city than the city marina. We stayed at the city marina in Charleston when we were there this spring, but other loopers stayed at the Maritime Center which is on the other side of the city right downtown and a few blocks from the Market. We were in Charleston last month and the Maritime Center is the best deal downtown. The tall ships were in town and so the Maritime Center was unavailable to us at the time. Still, it’s right downtown and reasonable, as mentioned in another post, any of the other reasonable marinas require a car. We second the comment regarding the Maritime Center, which we stayed at last Nov. Very convenient to the downtown market, restaurants, etc. (means walking distance for senior citizens) with a grocery mid-way between the market and the MC. It was a pleasant stay. A tour boat docks there and the working port is nearby – those are the only distractions we can recall. Bob Baker
To access the downtown restaurant’s in Charleston we like to tie up at the Charleston Maritime center located next to the Aquarium. We then walk into the city to eat and get a rickshaw back to the boat. It’s a great way to enjoy downtown. After hours you can dock at no charge or I have many times. We recently attended a wedding and reception downtown so we moved the boat that morning and paid the overnight rate which was very reasonable. The Docks at Charleston Maritime center are floating concrete, the cost is 1.20 per ft. (they may have a discount for longer term) and it is closer to town and only two blocks from Harris Teeter (great grocery store) and the staff are great. That’s where we stay every time we are in Charleston. Bob
We are leaving Charleston this morning after four nights at Charleston Maritime Center. It is very nice and $1.20 a foot with BoatUS vs $2 at the municipal. It is also much closer to sights and provisions. It is a block from the aquarium where the trolley picks you up and takes you thru the historic area and the visitor’s center where you can get other trolleys to anywhere in town. It is 2 blocks from a big grocery (Harris Teeter), produce store,and hardware store. It is 3 blocks from a pharmacy (RiteAid). The washer and dryer are free for boaters and the staff is very nice. It is also the water taxi stop to take you over to the USS Yorktown or on a harbor tour and the dock for the tallship, Spirit of South Carolina. Wright
Subject: Charleston Maritime Center Cruising News: I believe you are overstating the depth issue. We are currently at CMC at the innermost slip and we have around 5\’ of water at low tide (further out it is deeper). The inner half of the harbor is shallower, but there are no slips in the inner half. I\’d second the awsome service and great location. The only downside is if there is a good wind out of the northeast, the breakwall is not effective and it gets a rolly. FYI: $6/ft/week BUS (but check as they said new rates may be coming out soon). A tour boat docks there and the working port is nearby – those are the only distractions we can recall.

To access the downtown restaurant’s in Charleston we like to tie up at the Charleston Maritime center located next to the Aquarium. We then walk into the city to eat and get a rickshaw back to the boat. It’s a great way to enjoy downtown. After hours you can dock at no charge or I have many times.
We recently attended a wedding and reception downtown so we moved the boat that morning and paid the overnight rate which was very reasonable. After the reception we had a rickshaw peddle us back and spent the night right there. Great place to access downtown.

The Docks at Charleston Maritime center are floating concrete, the cost is 1.20 per ft. (they may have a discount for longer term) and it is closer to town and only two blocks from Harris Teeter (great grocery store) and the staff are great. That’s where we stay every time we are in Charleston.

We are leaving Charleston this morning after four nights at Charleston Maritime Center. It is very nice and $1.20 a foot with BoatUS vs $2 at the municipal. It is also much closer to sights and provisions. It is a block from the aquarium where the trolley picks you up and takes you thru the historic area and the visitor’s center where you can get other trolleys to anywhere in town. It is 2 blocks from a big grocery (Harris Teeter), produce store,and hardware store. It is 3 blocks from a pharmacy (RiteAid). The washer and dryer are free for boaters and the staff is very nice. It is also the water taxi stop to take you over to the USS Yorktown or on a harbor tour and the dock for the tallship, Spirit of South Carolina.

Cruising News: I believe you are overstating the depth issue. We are currently at CMC at the innermost slip and we have around 5\’ of water at low tide (further out it is deeper). The inner half of the harbor is shallower, but there are no slips in the inner half. I\’d second the awsome service and great location. The only downside is if there is a good wind out of the northeast, the breakwall is not effective and it gets a rolly. FYI: $6/ft/week BUS (but check as they said new rates may be coming out soon).
