Spent 4 nights here this past month. This is a beautiful and very well run marina. It is large and slips can be either close to the “action” or close to the marina office/store and showers. Regardless, one of the dock boys will show up in a golf cart to deliver you to your destination. Within walking distance there are several very nice restaurants and other shops. Transportation is also provided to the supermarket, or to the beach. Location is several miles off the ICW, up Broad Creek, and, as the name implies, it is very sheltered. Look forward to a return trip.
Plan on staying at Shelter Cove Marina in Hilton Head. Great location, pricing, food and entertainment within easy walking distance. Free Shuttle will take you to all locations within Palmetto Dunes. I like Shelter Cove on Hilton Head. It is about a 25 minute run up Broad Creek, but worth it. 7 or 8 restaurants surrounding the harbor plus more within walking distance. Shelter Cove Marina is a well maintained Disney property. It sits in the middle of a large condo, townhouse and boutique complex. There are a number of restaurants there mixed in with higher end boutique stores. Food is ok, nothing special. There is one major downside to some…all businesses and restaurants are closed by 9pm, even the tiki bar. Some docks are accessed from the far side of the creek from the commercial area, which can be a very long walk for some. Depths up the creek are 10′ or greater with no less than 7′ in the marina. I have been at Shelter Cove Marina for the last four months. In my opinion, this is one of the finest marinas on the East Coast. I will probably there another few months and this is my second visit there. I like the friendly and helpful staff, the marina location, the quality of the facilities, the closeness of the shopping and the closeness of several nice restaurants right there at the marina. I highly recommend Scott’s Restaurant for seafood, the happy hour at Kingfisher with $2.50 wine, $1.50 beer and shrimp and oyster specials. There is live music during dinner during most of the week at Kingfisher. Parrot Cove Cafe for sandwiches, and there are several other good restaurants. Giuseppe’s Pizza has two locations, one only a short distance away and the food there is very good. I understand it was “voted Hilton head’s best pizza 7 straight years”. Lots of activities at the marina on Tuesday nights including fireworks after dark. There is free “Dune Buggy” transportation to take you to the Palmetto Dunes Plantation resort which is on the ocean front. Main disadvantage to the marina is that if you end up on the side of the Disney Vacation Club, you can have a much further walk to the restaurants, shopping and the marina store. If you have a car, parking on the Disney side is limited to 20 minutes to load and unload. Call ahead for reservations as marina slips are often full and in tight supply. Fuel is reasonable and a pump-out is available. I have not had any problem with depth in Broad Creek. Just stay in the channel and don’t take short cuts without local knowledge. We’ve made this trip several times, and in fact Shelter Cove is one of our favorite marinas, period. It’s a long, slow no-wake cruise up Broad Creek to get there (figure on 45 minutes to an hour from Calibogue Sound), but it’s worth the trip. The marina is indeed well sheltered by condos and shops on all sides, and there are a wide variety of shops and restaurants to choose from. The marina offers fuel, pump-out, a Ship’s Store, cable TV, wi-fi, and helpful and friendly dockhands. The entrance channel to the marina can be a bit scary, as it’s pretty narrow and there are shoals on both sides. However, as long as you stay to the center of the channel, between the private markers, you should find anywhere from 5 to 7 feet of water at low tide (on our last visit there a couple of months ago, we had to get an early start back to Beaufort to meet other commitments, and left Shelter Cove at low tide in pitch darkness about 5 a.m. — but still made it through the channel with no problems other than white knuckles! Shelter Cove was our home marina. It is by far one of best kept, prettiest marinas in all our cruising. The biggest disadvantage is if you are put over on the Disney side. It is a long walk to bathrooms and showers from Docks I, J, K and L. Docks A through H are close to all the facilities. But the other ammenities are great. Lots of good restaurants on the marina or a short bike ride. Several restaurants will have entertainment and there are fireworks every Tues. night at 9 PM from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Fresh Market grocery store, West Marina 1 mile south. Mall, banks and Piggly Wiggly within a mile north. And the bike paths make riding or walking easy. Kathryn Jeidy
