[EXPIRED] May at Dismal Swamp State Park, AICW Alternate Route
Dismal Swamp State Park is getting back into full swing as they recover from massive flooding and closure due to Hurricane Matthew. The canal is still closed to navigation, but the State Park is continuing programs as weather permits.
Greetings!
Here are the May programs currently scheduled. I think I will be adding one more for May 20th that I will send separately, but since these are firm I wanted to go ahead and get them out.
Bird ID Workshop
Thu, 05/04/2017 – 9:00am to 1:00pm
Coastal North Carolina is a major breeding spot for neo-tropical migratory birds. These birds winter in Central and South America, and breed and make their summer home in this area. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission and Dismal Swamp State Park are offering a class where we will identify these well-traveled birds, as well as resident birds by sight and sound. It is open to the public ages 16 and up, and is free of charge.
This event will take place at Dismal Swamp State Park on May 4th from 9:00-1:00.
For more information or to register, contact the office at 252-771-6593 or email katie.sanford@ncparks.gov.
Paddle for the Border 2017

Join us and our co-sponsors for the annual Paddle for the Border! Spend this Saturday morning paddling along 7.5 miles of the beautiful Dismal Swamp Canal from South Mills, NC to Chesapeake, VA. Lunch is served at the conclusion of the paddle. Registration is now open and usually fills up fast! Visit http://www.cityofchesapeake.net/government/City-Departments/Departments/… to sign up.
Wagon Rides
Sundays through May 28, 11 am & 2 pm
Hop aboard the Dismal Swamp Express, an open-air wagon, for a 2-mile round trip, narrated ride along Canal Road. See the park’s liquor still and lighter boat replicas and maybe even some interesting birds or other wildlife! The ride lasts 45 minutes to an hour and is filled on a first come, first served basis. If the weather is questionable or you have a large group, please call the office at 252-771-6593 in advance. Insect repellent is recommended. Bring snacks and water if you want them.
See you in the park!
