Railroad Bridge Anchorage – Claiborne’s Review

An unnamed creek makes into the Pasquotank’s southeastern banks 0.3 nautical mile south-southwest of the charted railroad bridge near Camden. This sidewater offers the best overnight anchorage on the entire Dismal Swamp Canal Route. It boasts minimum depths of 8 to 10 feet and affords plenty of swinging room for boats up to 50 feet. Try dropping the hook anywhere near the centerline, just inside the stream’s northwesterly mouth. Two lovely homes overlook the stream’s northeastern shores, adding to the anchorage’s appeal. Protection is sufficient for any winds short of a hurricane.
You may be wondering how a creek with such consistently excellent depths could be a part of the shoal-prone northeastern North Carolina coastline. Well, guess what. According to Bob Jordan, of ICW-Net.com fame, fill dirt was taken from this site to help build the Camden–Elizabeth City causeway. Hence, the 8+-foot sounding. Thank you, North Carolina DOT!
