Shoaling on Big Foot Slough Channel – Ocrocoke, NC (Pamlico Sound)

Posted by Claiborne | Posted on 10-11-2009

The Big Foot Slough Channel is the primary access to wonderful Ocracoke Island. This is also the passage used by the two large, deep draft car ferries which make regular trips from Ocracoke to the NC mainland.
Shoaling along the Big Foot Slough Channel is, unfortunately, a regular occurrence, and the route can become narrowed between dredging cycles. After reading Captain Boxmeyer’s message below, looks like it will soon be time for the state to dredge these waters yet again.

Subject: Ocracoke channel shoal
Cruising News: We spent the night of Nov. 7 anchored in Silver Lake at Ocracoke. The next morning as we were departing via the Big Foot Slough Channel we had to pass the incoming ferry. As I moved to starboard to give them room we hit the bottom while still in the channel between markers 10A and 10B. We draw three and one half feet. This channel gets a bit narrow as you approach the Pamlico Sound entrance. If you can favor the green side as we did coming in and never saw less than eight foot of water.
