Southport, NC (Statute Mile 309)
When I was growing up in the late 1950’s and early 60’s, my family spent summers living aboard in old Southport Harbor, My father was fast friends with a local skipper, Captain Sonny Potter. Many an afternoon we came back to the docks with a boat full of fish, thanks to Captain Sonny. There are still more than a few Potters in Southport, and you may well run into a few during your visit. GREAT people indeed!
Today, Southport still features some of the most beautiful and tranquil lanes you will ever discover in your cruising travels. A stroll along West Street, for instance, is almost sure to bring about a lowering of one’s blood pressure.
Downtown Southport exhibits a rather amazing collection of antique shops, sprinkled here and there with several good restaurants, and a most interesting maritime museum. Don’t miss it!
Mariners are welcomed at a newly refurbished marina, now privately managed, which features the latest in state of the art dockage and shoreside support facilities. These good folks are a SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR.
In short, don’t dare miss North Carolina’s southernmost port of call! Those who pass by are missing some of the best the Tar Heel coastline has to offer!
