    • [EXPIRED] LNM: Temporary Safety Zone, Camp Lejeune Training Exercises, Oct 10-30, AICW Statute Miles 235-240

These are delays that you can expect and which you will be happy to observe, since normally there is live fire across the Waterway during these training sessions. Besides, the young people operating the patrol boats are friendly and very willing to come alongside to pass the time and explain the delay.

NC – ATLANTIC INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY – CAMP LEJEUNE – SAFETY ZONE
The Coast Guard is establishing a temporary Safety Zone on all waters of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway between Mile Hammock Bay and Onslow Beach Swing Bridge between 10 Oct and 30 Oct 2017 from 7 AM to 5 PM for a military training exercise. Vessels may not enter, remain in or transit through the Safety Zone during the enforcement period unless authorized by the Coast Guard Captain of the Port, or designated patrol personnel on scene.

The USCG Notice To Mariners has announced the the firing range at Camp Lejeune will be active from October 10-30. This is a broad statement and does mean the ICW is closed for 20 days I spoke to the range officer at 16:20 October 6. He had no information on this USCG announcement, but did say that Monday October 9, the range is open and on Tuesday the 10th it will be closed on the odd hours and open on the even hours. The best t way to get the most accurate information is to call the range office (910.451.3064) after 15:00 the afternoon prior to your transit.

Are there breaks in this training for boats to transit? I’ve always avoided Lejune during these exercises but or schedule this year makes a transit during this period very desirable. We could arrive at the bridge at 5:00 and then make Mile Hammock Bay or the next marina but it seems like it might be very crowded there.
        Experienced comments appreciated.

There is always a patrol boat at each end of the ICW through Camp Lejeune when a firing exercise is in progress, in addition to flashing warning lights on a billboard on the starboard side of the ICW. Both the boats and the control tower will answer VHF 16, or you could try calling USCG Ft. Macon on the VHF to determine the exact times of closing the waterway. Normally the firing exercises close the ICW for 4 or 5 hours during the day, and not usually every day.
