    • [EXPIRED] Vertical Clearance Reduction, William B Umstead (US-64) Bridge, Croatan Sound, NC

Croatan Sound connects Albemarle Sound to the north and Pamlico Sound to the south via a broad channel crossed by two sets of fixed bridges. The older, northernmost span has a vertical clearance of 45ft, and has LONG been the bane of sailors who must use the far more difficult Roanoke Sound – Old House channel to cruise south from the AICW/Albemarle Sound to Pamlico Sound, or the other way around. The southernmost twin Highway 64 bridges, where this maintenance will take place, feature 66ft of vertical clearance.

NC – CROATAN SOUND – US64 – WILLIAM B. UMSTEAD BRIDGE – REDUCED HORIZONTAL CLEARANCE
An engineering firm on behalf of NCDOT will be repairing the fender system on the US 64 (William B. Umstead) Bridge across Croatan Sound, mile 2.0, in Manns Harbor, NC. The maintenance will be conducted from November 1, 2017, to January 30, 2018; Monday – Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The horizontal clearance will be reduced to 51 feet during the work hours due to a 40 ft wide barge and 10 ft wide work boat that will be used to facilitate repairs. The barge and crew request a one hour advanced notice to move from the navigable channel for vessels that need additional clearance. The Project Foreman can be reached at 252-305-7324 or VHF/FM CH 13. Mariners should use caution when transiting the area. Chatr 12204 LNM 42/17
