    • [EXPIRED] Winterization Advice from Pierside Boatworks, Cooper River, Charleston, SC

Even here in Charleston we have concerns about freezing temperatures and, especially if you are further north, Pierside Boatworks on the Cooper River in Charleston has very good advice for winterization of your vessel.

Our first freeze of the year is past us with very little damage reported.
Even though Charleston has relatively mild winters, it is very important to protect your vessel from those occasional nights of sub freezing temperatures. Our basic winterization addresses the major concerns associated with storing your boat, engine, freshwater and sea water system during cold weather months:

Water left in the engine block, heat exchangers and water pumps expands as it freezes and can cracks or damage the block or other components.
Untreated fuel, both gasoline and diesel leads to clogged up carburetors, injectors, and gums up fuel pumps and filters.
Fresh and saltwater systems are critical even in mild freezes as the valves, lines and pumps are easily damaged by frozen water.
Internal engine components rust due to lack of lubrication.

Addressing these issues now can save you from costly repairs in the spring.

      Helpful things to remember
      – Be sure to check your boat and motor owner’s manuals for manufacturer recommendations.
      – Start with the engine & follow appropriate recommendations for engine winterization.
      – Remember to thoroughly inspect the drive and running gear.
      – Fill your fuel tank & add a fuel stabilizer/conditioner.
      – Make sure the bilges are clean and dry.
      – Drain your fresh water systems and flush with nontoxic antifreeze.
      – Check and winterize sea water systems including heat exchanger, water pumps, heads and air conditioning systems. Remember about the head & the interior.
      – Think about where to store your boat. Inside, outside, in water or on the hard. Prepare accordingly
      – Service your boat now, beat the spring rush and be ready for warm weather when it arrives.
      – Invest in a cover to keep your boat clean & dry.
