This destroyed Matlacha Pass daybeacon is in northern San Carlos Bay at the western end of the Okeechobee Waterway. It appears from the two Nav Alerts in at this area that both Daybeacon #1 and Daybeacon #8 have been destroyed. Note Gene Fuller’s onsite observation that “there are two temporary marks, green and red, in fairly close proximity.”

There is a bit of confusion in this posting. The earlier navigation alert was in regard to GREEN number 1 on the northbound Matlacha channel. The latest incident is referenced to RED number 8 on the Pine Island Sound channel (also known as the western end of the “Miserable Mile.”

The USCG would never replace a green mark with a red floater. There are two separate replacements.

I have always found the red side of the Miserable Mile to be a bit iffy, and I always stay well clear of the red marks.

I do not know if the confusion noted here has any bearing on the grounding incident, but others might be warned that there are two temporary marks, green and red, in fairly close proximity.

It has been replaced with a temporary Red buoy and marked as “8 WR” . Steer clear of it and don’t get near to it . According , to the markers , I was clearly in the channel by at least 15 feet . However, I ran aground into only 2.8 feet of water . I called the Coast Guard as did Sea Tow . It needs to be moved asap .
