    • Are you Concerned about the St Lucie Rail Bridge? OWW MM 7

This FEC RR bridge with 6 ft vertical clearance crosses the Okeechobee Waterway and connects Britt Point with Stuart.

Recently Brightline held a public meeting regarding the Rail Bridge over the St. Lucie River. The MIATC Board is reviewing the information and working to establish a position. Here is some information gathered at the meeting:

      • The current RR bridge could remain in place with continued and ongoing repairs by the railroad. The bridge may experience increased repair issues due to age. This will mean little to no improvements to boater safety around the bridge.
      • The new bridge could be constructed to be slightly higher than the current bridge when closed and with a wider opening. A “tall” 65’ bridge is not an option due to grade needed for freight trains.
      • Freight service and passenger service are not going away. This bridge will be regularly used by the train companies it services.

The MIATC’s concern is boating safety on our waters. The potential hazard of multiple vessels waiting on either side of the existing drawbridge [especially during anticipated repairs, see recent LNM above] causes us to want a safer solution. It is with this in mind that motivates this request for information.

      Thank you
