[EXPIRED] August at Dismal Swamp State Park, South Mills, NC, AICW Alternate Route
The Dismal Swamp Canal remains closed to navigational traffic, due to damage from Hurricane Matthew last fall. Dredge work to remove shoaling continues and the Canal anticipates reopening in September for the fall boating season. The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center has remained open to highway travelers. The Dismal Swamp State Park, a part of the NC State Park System is also open and their programs are featured in this newsletter.

August (and the end of summer!) is nearly upon us! Here are the upcoming programs at the park for the month. We are asking for pre-registration for ALL of them this month to help us with planning.

Boat Launch
Join the ranger for a leisurely paddle along the historic Dismal Swamp Canal. Everything you need—boat, paddle, PFD, and basic instruction—will be provided. Paddlers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Trip is limited to 8 boats, so YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER.
Solar Eclipse Viewing Party

Visitor Center
Join us for sun-themed solar eclipse viewing party! Special viewing glasses will be available to allow you to safely experience this rare event. We’ll have crafts and activities set up as well, so bring the kids along. You can stop by anytime between 1-4 pm and stay as long as you like. We do, however, request that you call the office and let us know how many people are in your group so that we can plan accordingly for supplies.
Attracting Butterflies

Attracting butterflies and other pollinators is beneficial to your garden as well as the butterflies themselves. Learn about pollinators, some butterfly ID, native wildflowers, and garden planning in this primarily indoor presentation. Afterward, there will be an optional craft activity for younger children to make and take home. Please pre-register by calling the office to help us plan for supplies.
