As Blades Robinson relates below, this straight narrow channel exits Cape River northbound at lighted ICW marker 177 and ends at the southern entrance to Snows Cut. In April, ICW marker 163 was reported off-station. Our thanks to Blades for this update.
Channel from Marker 177 to 164 Near MM-297 / Good depth We ran this cut today at dead low tide and had a MINIMUM of 7 feet of depth and saw mostly ten and twelves on the depth recorder. FYI. Blades Robinson
The marked entry channel to Deep Point Marina – A CRUISERS NET SPONSOR! – lies northwest of Cape Fear River/AICW marker #20.Our thanks to Blades Robinson for this review.
I had a great visit to Deep Point Marina and look forward to a return visit. Dock master Shan provided good information and shared his local knowledge. A taxi driver (Ellen, who lives aboard at the marina) gave us a ride to “town” for $8 where we enjoyed ice cold adult beverages and an excellent seafood dinner. The marina pool was refreshing and the complimentary washing machines/driers were an added bonus. Before leaving this morning we had an excellent breakfast in the coffee shop located in the Bald Head Island ferry terminal located next door to the marina. The fact that they support the CruisersNet makes this a worthwhile stop. Blades Robinson

This safety zone is established for the move of equipment barges up the Cape Fear River to Wilmington as announced earlier, see One-Day Closure. The closure will effectively shut down the AICW from Southport to Snows Cut.
Coast Guard to establish safety zone on Cape Fear River, NC
WILMINGTON, N.C. — A temporary safety zone is scheduled to be enforced on the Cape Fear River, April 8, for the transit of the 776-foot motor vessel Zhen Hua 25.
The temporary safety zone will close a large portion of the Cape Fear River to vessel traffic for approximately five to seven hours, affecting all navigable waters about 26 miles south of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, until the ship is safely moored at the North Carolina State Ports Authority.
Commercial vessels moored at facilities within the safety zone must depart prior to midnight, April 7, and no vessel is authorized to moor, transit, or remain within the river while the safety zone is in effect.
A second safety zone will be enforced for approximately two to four hours on separate days for the offload of a Neo-Panamax crane. The zone will include all of the waters within a 200-yard radius around the motor vessel Zhen Hua 25 while moored at NCSPA Berth Eight.
Vessel traffic south of NCSPA will not be impacted during the second safety zone.
If you have any questions concerning the closure of the Cape Fear River, please contact the
Waterways Management Division at NCmarineevents@uscg.mil or Coast Guard personnel at 910-772-2230.

Skipper Jim Lea offers an offshore route to avoid two Waterway Problem Stretches in NC. And Jim mentions Bald Head Island Marina, A CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR!
The best way to get through this area is to avoid it altogether by exiting the ICW via the Little River Inlet and enjoying a short relaxing sail across Long Bay to re-enter via the Cape Fear River. In eight trips up and down the ICW we have always done this outside hop. In addition, there is a beautiful anchorage off Bird Island at the mouth of the Little River Inlet, avoiding the usually crowded anchorage in Calabash Creek. At the mouth of the Cape Fear River, the marina at Bald Head Island is an excellent stop. Jim Lea

The company is Zimmerman Marine and has a wide-spread reputation for being among the best. Someone told me if I ever needed repairs to go to Zimmerman Marine, which has five locations. Amazing that my accident happened right at a Zimmerman Marine base at Southport Marina, NC. Tell anyone that this is a very polished and professional company. They made a difficult situation much easier and it’s obvious that the company is trusted by the insurance industry. Vicki
Port City Marina is located along the eastern banks of the Cape Fear River, in the heart of downtown Wilmington, NC. These good words for Port City Marina are posted with permission of Ray Henry from AGLCA’s Forum.
Port City Marina is a spectacular new marina in Wilmington. We were there for 6 months. A bit spendy at $14/ft, but well worth it for a short period of you are going to be aboard much of the time. Easy walk to all of the great downtown eateries. Fantastic staff. The Shell has some fun events right there. If you’re not going to be aboard, then likely not worth the cost. Ray Henry
Bennett Brothers Yachts is in Wilmington, NC on the Cape Fear River.
I just wanted to report that BENNETT BROTHERS YACHTS was unaffected by Hurricane Irma and it is business as usual. We really dodged a bullet! We hauled almost 20 boats for our hurricane haulout plan and the Cape Fear Marina slips were completely filled. Our protected location up the Northeast Cape Fear River makes for a great place to ride out any storm either in the water or on the hard.
Our staff of 20 skilled technicians are ready to assist any boaters traveling north and south with any repairs or restoration jobs needed. We often help the boat owner work with the insurance company in the event of damage from a storm on their vessel.
If you would like to talk with Al Noble, our Service Manager, to discuss any projects you might be considering, please give him a call at 910-772-9277.
