      Gulfport Historical Museum

Join Gulfport Historical Society for the August edition of our Florida Summer Cinema Series!

This month’s movie tells the story of Jack Chester, a stressed-out air traffic controller who goes on vacation with his family. Things don’t exactly go as planned, and a final showdown between Jack and the owner of his dubious rental property takes place, of course, as a boat race! Much of the film was shot in St. Pete and several local landmarks make an appearance, including the old St. Petersburg Pier and the old Sunshine Skyway. This film is rated PG.

Pack a picnic, bring chairs, and join us for the screening on the back lawn of the Gulfport History Museum. Doors open at 7:30, film begins at sunset. This event is free and open to the public.

We offer a huge thanks to Ken Simmons, a wonderful supporter of Gulfport Historical Society, who is sponsoring our August film.

    • Goodbye 2020, Hello 2021! Gulfport Historical Society, Gulfport, FL

Gulfport Marina includes dry boat storage, ship store, bathroom, public boat ramp, parking, fueling stations, lighted range markers and guest docking facility.

During the pandemic, the Gulfport Historical Society continues its educational activities for the City of Gulfport, home to Gulfport Municipal Marina, A CRUISERS NET SPONSOR, located on the northern shores of Boca Ciega Bay and easily accessible from the Western Florida ICW, just north of Tampa Bay.

A New Years Message to Our Members

      Dear Gulfport Historical Society Members,

Well, it’s been quite a year!

While most of us will be happy enough to see the end of 2020, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on what we as a community have been able to accomplish, even in difficult times.

2020 started strong with two porch parties that packed the house—one honoring Gulfport’s first woman mayor, Mayor Yvonne Johnson, and another featuring research on Flamingo Tour ’20 homes presented by one of our outstanding volunteers, John Avery. And, of course, we wagged in five new elected “pawficers” through our first-ever Pet Mayor competition. (By the way, due to the smaller number of live events we hosted this year, we have decided to extend their terms for another year, giving them a few more opportunities to represent our four-legged constituency. But we do plan to hold another pet election in 2022!)

Then COVID hit, and, like everyone else, we had to rethink how we did just about everything. We had to close the museum, but we found new ways to reach our community through virtual Florida Snapshots presentations on everything from local shell mounds to Florida food traditions to Florida’s natural history. We brought you back to the museum—just outside, on the lawn—for socially distanced porch parties, celebrating Gulfport’s spirit of volunteerism alongside Gulfport Votes 100% and hearing fabulous tales of the early settlers of Pinellas County from Erik Anderson. With the help of our fantastic volunteers, we also worked to get the Gulfport Arts Center ready to become a hub for local artists and arts classes that will help us fully engage our mission to celebrate Gulfport’s history and culture.

We are looking forward to the year to come! As the pandemic situation begins to improve, we plan to reopen the museum in February and launch our first programs at the Gulfport Arts Center. We are working on another year of great porch parties, both virtual and in person, to bring our community together for fellowship and learning. And, as ever, our walking tours, offered every third Saturday of the month, remain a great way to get to know Gulfport’s unique history.

Your support makes all of this possible. Please consider donating to the Gulfport History Society. Giving is easy—you can do it online here—and every bit helps us keep on preserving and celebrating the history of the town we all love.

Wishing you all a happy new year!

“Working at a homeless cold weather shelter on Christmas night is a unique and wonderful thing,” said Lauren Wolf, who coordinates the program with Cliff Smith. “This is neighbors helping neighbors and is the ultimate expression of the Christmas spirit.”

This giving spirit is present year-round for the volunteers, organizers and faith-based and community centers who open their doors to serve our houseless neighbors. However, this year is especially challenging due to COVID-19. Fewer volunteers are able to help, while more are required for temperature checks and distribution of face masks and sanitizer. With the number of homeless residents on the rise, social distancing requiring more physical space, and cleaning and safety protocols, covering basic expenses has become an even bigger challenge.

“We are grateful to a community that is always willing to support those in need,” said the program’s co-coordinator Cliff Smith. “At this time when all faiths come together during a season of giving, we are hoping for continued support and assistance to continue helping our most vulnerable individuals.”

Pinellas residents, businesses urged to follow mask ordinance
      as COVID cases rise
Local State of Emergency extended through Dec. 11

      • COVID-19 cases are rising rapidly in Pinellas, threatening hospital capacity and vulnerable residents
      • Sheriff’s Office announces additional compliance efforts at bars, restaurants and other businesses
      • Residents urged to mask up and practice social distancing in public to stop the spread

With COVID-19 cases reaching levels not seen since the summer, Pinellas County leaders are urging businesses and residents to follow the local protocols requiring face coverings at indoor public places and social distancing to stop the spread of the virus.

Over the past month, new cases per day have tripled and the percentage of people testing positive has doubled, reaching 8.4 percent on November 29 compared to 4.2 percent on October 30. Patients on ventilators have also nearly doubled in that time, from 32 to 57. Increases in deaths typically lag one to two weeks behind increases in new cases.

The County’s local ordinance remains in place, but an increasing number of people ignoring the mask rule at bars and other businesses, combined with flu season and holiday gatherings, are expected to cause a further spike in cases through the end of the year.

The Sheriff’s Office is placing new signage at local businesses to remind staff and patrons of the protocol and will follow up at those businesses reported to be consistently violating the ordinance.

Pinellas County Administrator Barry A. Burton and Sheriff Bob Gualtieri were joined by County Commission Chair Pat Gerard, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman and Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard at a Thursday news conference to underscore a new countywide push for stronger compliance.

“We want to stay open and we want to stay safe. We want our businesses to thrive and we want to help them in doing these simple measures to keep everybody safe so we can continue to operate just as we are,” Burton said.

Deputies recently traveled around the county and found 40 percent of bars and 8 percent of restaurants in violation of the ordinance, including staff not wearing masks, Sheriff Gualtieri said.

“These things are required by law. Wearing a mask is not fun, but the alternative is worse,” he said.

“Fines and penalties are not suspended for businesses, so if we have to go down that path, we can. We don’t want to. We need the businesses, again, to help us help you – to help the community,” he said.

Continuing to mask up in public and practice social distancing is the only option for eliminating the virus, protecting people and keeping businesses open until a vaccine is widely available, which isn’t expected until next year, according to federal health officials.

Face masks have been proven effective in reducing the number of new COVID-19 cases, both in the Tampa Bay area and nationwide.

Burton and Gualtieri are hosting a Facebook Live Event on Friday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. to answer questions about the new countywide compliance effort.

Pinellas County has also extended its State of Local Emergency for COVID-19 through December 11. The extension was issued by County Administrator Barry A. Burton by delegated authority from the Board of County Commissioners.

The extension keeps in effect a County ordinance requiring face coverings within public places, and restaurants and bars to serve only patrons who are seated. Public health officials continue to closely monitor the 7-day rolling averages for new COVID-19 cases, percentage of positive tests, hospitalizations and hospital bed capacity.

FDACS Asking Floridians to Report Suspicious Seed Packets from China

Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) is warning Floridians about unsolicited packages of seeds received through the mail. The seed packets, which may arrive unexpectedly in packages bearing Chinese characters, may bear the name China Post, and may be labeled as jewelry, have been reported in multiple states including Virginia, Kansas, Washington, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Utah, and others.

As of July 27, FDACS has received at least 160 reports from Florida residents reporting having received suspicious seed packages. The content of the seed packages is unknown at this time.

The introduction of plant seeds into the United States is tightly regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Seeds of unknown origin may constitute agricultural smuggling, may be invasive, may introduce pathogens, toxins, or plant and animal diseases, may pose a risk of foodborne illness, and may pose a threat to plant, animal, and human health. FDACS is working closely to receive guidance from the USDA and its Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), the lead regulatory body on this issue, in consultation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“Plant seeds from unknown sources may introduce dangerous pathogens, diseases, or invasive species into Florida, putting agriculture and our state’s plant, animal, and human health at risk,” said Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried. “Anyone receiving these suspicious seed packets should not open them, should not plant them, should limit contact with them, and should report them immediately to both our department and USDA officials.”

What To Do: Anyone receiving unsolicited seed packages from other countries should follow these directions:

When reporting the seed package to FDACS and USDA/APHIS, please be prepared to provide one’s name, physical address, phone number, and email address for contact purposes.

PINELLAS: COMMISSION PASSES EMERGENCY ORDINANCE REQUIRING FACE COVERINGS, OTHER COVID-19 SAFETY MEASURES

      • Citizens must wear face coverings in most indoor places, with exceptions
      • Emergency ordinance covers entire county and takes effect Wednesday, June 24, at 5 p.m.
      • Restaurants, bars must spread out patrons, prevent congregating and only serve seated patrons

Faced with an alarming surge in COVID-19 cases, the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday passed an emergency ordinance requiring that citizens wear face coverings in most indoor public places, and restaurants and bars to implement new safety and anti-crowding measures. The ordinance passed 6-1, with Commissioner Kathleen Peters dissenting.

The countywide ordinance takes effect Wednesday, June 24, at 5 p.m., and will remain in effect through the duration of Pinellas County’s State of Local Emergency. The Board extended that declaration through July 3 and can continue to renew it on a weekly basis.

The ordinance defines a face covering as a material that covers the nose and mouth and remains affixed or a face shield. A cloth face covering, or mask, may be factory-made or sewn by hand and can be improvised from clothing or other household fabric items.

      Requirements:

      • Citizens must wear a face covering while in most indoor public places within Pinellas County, although the Board provided several exceptions. Among them:
      • The mandate cannot conflict with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
      • It does not apply if a person is strictly adhering to social distancing and there are 10 or fewer people in the location who are also maintaining social distancing.
      • It does not apply to governmental entities such as schools, courthouses or city halls, although those entities are encouraged to develop procedures to protect employees and the public.
      • The City of Gulfport is requiring face coverings in all City of Gulfport Public Facilities with the exclusion of the Gulfport Recreation Center.
      • If a person is under age 18, that person’s use of a face covering is left to the discretion of that person’s parent, guardian or an accompanying adult.
      • Religious rituals such as various forms of singing are permitted provided that social distancing is strictly maintained.
      • Exercising while social distancing, such as in a gym, is permitted without a face covering.

      • Restaurant and bar staff must wear a face covering while on duty and while directly or indirectly preparing food or beverage, or serving food or beverage, or having customer contact, regardless of where the food or beverage is being prepared or whether the customers are inside or outside. Customers can remove their face coverings while dining or consuming a beverage when seated and social distancing.

      • Restaurants and bars must position chairs and tables so that parties of one or more are separated by six feet and patrons are not standing at the bar or congregating in any area.

      • Retail employees must wear face coverings unless working in an area of the business that is not open to the customers and has social distancing measures in place.

      Carefully weighed decision

The Board made its decision based on COVID-19 trending data, the advice of the County’s leading public health officials, and CDC guidance. Through the Zoom virtual meeting platform, the Board also took several hours of public comment.

Dr. Ulyee Choe, director of the Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County, pointed out that the county’s rolling 7-day average of new COVID-19 cases is up to 219 per day, with a positive test rate of about 12 percent, whereas the positivity rate was only 1 to 2 percent five weeks ago. Dr. Angus Jameson, medical director for Pinellas County Emergency Medical Services, noted that COVID-19 cases in the greater Tampa Bay area have increased from about 125 per day three weeks ago to about 1,000 cases a day, raising concerns that COVID-19 will continue to spread exponentially and overwhelm the healthcare system.

      Enforcement

The Board elected to adopt the emergency order by ordinance to allow it to be enforced as a non-criminal local ordinance violation, in addition to other enforcement remedies.

      Remedies include:
      • A warning.
      • A non-criminal ordinance violation citation that levies a fine.
      • Injunctive relief through a complaint filed in Circuit Court.
      • Misdemeanor arrest or a Notice to Appear for Repeat Violations.

How is this class unique? It reminds one of yoga, Pilates, Feldenkrais and maybe other practices and yet it is not. It does not focus on repetition of a set of exercises. The classes are built on a flow of movement with a main theme that develops and finds connections in the body that make sense for more efficient movement. Words do not do it justice; it has to be experienced within the body. Is it easy? Not really. Is it too hard? Absolutely not.

This class will focus on attention as we work, coupled with body awareness, allows us to find pathways for movement that re-balance our system. It is a study about our own patterns of movement which we can change to make more sense to the system.

Classes are slower than most classes, which allows us time to find the connection, pay attention and concentrate on the center and the core of the body. No mindless repetition, but a strong mind-body connection.

We allow movement to flow, progressing in a circular motion so as to follow the shape of the joints, utilizing breath, imagery and intention while we work. All that puts us on the pain toward attaining new levels of wellness.

      Community Outreach
The Gulfport Merchant’s Chamber (GMC) has announced a call for applicants for its 2020/2021 community support grant program. Local non-profit organizations that target or include Gulfport in their activities are invited to apply. Applicants must be certified tax-exempt non-profit organizations, government entities requesting funds for public purposes, or schools and colleges at any level.

For more details and to apply, see the application available at www.VisitGulfportFlorida.comClick on “Community Grant” at the bottom of the home page. Submission of an application does not guarantee funding and the Board of the GMC reserves the right to determine or adjust the amount awarded to any recipient. Applications must be received in writing and must be emailed, postmarked or delivered no later than March 31, 2020. Applications received after the deadline cannot be considered. Decisions on recipients are scheduled to be announced by the end of April 2020.

Special consideration will be given to organizations that are able to help promote and provide volunteers for the GMC events that raise the funds making these grants possible. “Gecko World” events with funds earmarked each year for community giving include “Gecko Crawl,” “Gecko Ball” and the GeckoFest street festival. The events grow in size and popularity every year and each requires a large promotional effort and a large number of volunteers. Events occur in late summer. Grant amounts will be determined and funds distributed to grantees after these GMC events have concluded for 2020.

Since sponsoring the community grants, the GMC has provided many thousands of dollars in funding to a large and growing roster of worthy non-profit organizations. The GMC also gives back to the community in other ways during the year, including sponsoring “Gulfport’s Get Rescued” each February, benefitting animal rescue groups. And a monthly Clothing Swap benefitting CASA is held during the Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market. Public art installations have also been commissioned and installed with GMC funding.
