[EXPIRED] December Programs at Dismal Swamp State Park, Dismal Swamp Canal, AICW Alternate Route
The Dismal Swamp Canal had been closed to navigation since Hurricanes Matthew and Irma and its recent restricted re-opening is welcome news to cruisers. Docks and information are provided at the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center, an NC DOT Rest Area facility, and are located adjacent to the Dismal Swamp State Park, offering trails, exhibits and ongoing programs in Camden County, NC.

South Mills VFD Christmas Parade, Sat, 12/02/2017 – 11:00am
Main Street, Town of South Mills
We’ll be participating in the local parade! Come see the park’s festive float, and check out the other beautiful entries in the annual Christmas Parade. Support our friends at the South Mills Volunteer Fire Department. *This event is NOT at the park- it is organized by the SMVFD.*

Winter Solstice Night Hike, Thu, 12/21/2017 – 5:00pm
Visitor Center Parking Lot
Experience the Swamp after dark! Take a guided hike along Bull Boulevard with the ranger to see what comes out when the sun goes down. The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, and it’s also the peak night for the Ursid meteor shower. Dress in warm layers. You can bring a flashlight- red lights are best, but we will have a few red balloons available to convert your white light. Children are welcome, but please be prepared for a very dark night–there will be almost no moon! *You must pre-register for this hike by calling the office to sign up!*
Drop-in Holiday Craft, Sat, 12/23/2017 – 8:00am to Sun, 12/24/2017 – 4:30pm

Stop by anytime this weekend to make a “naturally wonderful” holiday-themed craft project to brighten your home! Kid-friendly with adult supervision, but crafters of all ages are welcome to participate. We’ll have all the supplies ready for you! Daily, from 8 am-4:30 pm: please plan to be finished no later than 4:30 pm each day.
Winter Birding Basics, Sat, 12/30/2017 – 2:00pm

Winter is a wonderful time to observe many different types of birds. Some are only here for the winter, and most make use of the park bird feeders, which means you can observe them from the warmth of the indoors! Learn a little about identifying birds and which ones to look for this time of year. This program is intended for beginners.

Ring in the New Year at the Dismal Swamp! Get a jump start on your 100-Mile Challenge for 2018, and enjoy some fresh air. We’ll provide hot chocolate and cookies afterward!
