Florida braces for 5,000-mile-wide stinky seaweed blob — and a toxic algae bloom
A toxic algae bloom is killing fish along the Gulf Coast and southern Florida just as spring break kicks in. Now, a seaweed blob twice as wide as the U.S. is headed toward popular beaches.

A huge blob of sargassum seaweed that has formed in the Atlantic Ocean looks headed for the Florida coastlines throughout the Gulf of Mexico. The sargassum, a naturally occurring type of macroalgae, currently spans more than 5,000 miles, and it follows a toxic algae bloom already hitting the Sunshine State. GETTY IMAGES
