    • [EXPIRED] LNM: Alligator River Bridge Repairs Continue, April 16 – July 15, AICW Statute Mile 84

These maintenance repairs are part of a year long project begun in July of 2017, see LNM: Upcoming Maintenance. And, as past experience has taught, you may expect changes in these announced dates and conditions. The Alligator River Bridge crosses the Alligator River section of the Waterway, south of flashing marker #12 and just south of where the Waterway exits Albemarle Sound.
You may or may not, depending on how nostalgic you are, be happy to note that:

NC – ALLIGATOR RIVER – BRIDGE MAINTENANCE
An engineering firm, on behalf of North Carolina Department of Transportation, will be performing maintenance at US 64 (Alligator River Bridge) bridge, over AICW (Alligator River), mile 84.2, near Columbia, NC. The maintenance will be conducted from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Monday-Saturday; from April 16, 2018, through July 15, 2018. Maintenance of the pivot pier pilings will occur. During this bridge maintenance project, one navigable channel will be occupied during work hours; the other channel will be free for navigation with an available navigational clearance of approximately 100 feet horizontal clearance. Mariners should navigate the waterway with extreme caution and due regard for prevailing conditions on the waterway. A 104 x 40 foot spud barge, 26 foot and 27 foot work vessels, a team of divers, and several work floats will be in and around the vicinity of the bridge. Maintenance personnel, equipment and vessels will relocate from the moveable span and navigable channel, upon request. Work vessels may be reached on VHF-FM channel 16. The project foreman can be reached at (757) 449-4652 or (252) 202-2112. Mariners should notify the work foreman no less than two hours prior to navigating the bridge and should use extreme caution when navigating through the area. Chart 11553 LNM 15/18

BTW the bridge at AR is VERY slow to open as they are still working on it. Call well before you get there to see what their time frame is so you don’t waste fuel by running up there and having to wait 45 minutes. I stayed at the Alligator River Marina just after the bridge. EZ entry and docking then a short 4+ hour run the next morning up to Coinjock Marina and their King 32oz prime rib dinner (order in advance and bring your big boy wallet!).

This article is incorrect. I called the project foreman, and he has nothing to do with the bridge opening schedule. He gave me the bridge tender’s phone number, who confirmed it is still on demand (as usual), with the exception that boats may be delayed a bit if some critical operation is under way upon arrival. There is no 2 hour notification requirement. He also indicated that the main span work would be done well before mid June, let alone mid July. Other bridge work in the area would still be under way.
