VA – NC – INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY – DISMAL SWAMP CANAL & TURNERS CUT FEDERAL CHANNEL – DUCKWEED GROWTH
The Dismal Swamp Canal and Turners Cut Federal Channel on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Virginia and North Carolina are currently experiencing heavy levels of duckweed, a small native aquatic plant that can aggressively spread in the right environmental conditions. The duckweed is located on the water surface in large mats and can be transported from one waterway to another. Duckweed has been known to clog sea strainers, resulting in overheating of marine engines and could possibly cause other mechanical problems. Vessels that wish to avoid the duckweed should transit the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal through the Great Bridge Lock in Chesapeake, Virginia. This lock will be open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Lock Operators monitor Channel 13.
