    Order by:
    • LNM: Major Dredging Project Underway, Charleston Harbor, AICW Statute Mile 465

This dredging to increase channel depth to 52ft has been in the planning for years and is intended to make Charleston docks accessible to the larger container ships now navigating the expanded Panama Canal. The east/west Waterway crosses the shipping channel on the eastern side of the harbor. Our thanks to Officer Heck for this notice.

The Charleston Harbor Post 45 Deepening Project is a multi-year dredge operation that will deepen the harbor and entrance channel from its current authorized depth of 45 (47) feet below mean low low-water (MLLW) to the new authorized depth of 52 (54) MLLW (Entrance Channel).

Dredge operations are expected to start on March 2, 2018 with the hopper dredge “TERRAPIN ISLAND” working in the Entrance Channel. Hopper work will take place between December 1 and March 31 each year ending March 31, 2020.

Additionally, several other dredge platforms and associated tug & barge configurations are expected to start dredging on April 15, 2018. This work will also be performed in the entrance channel and is expected to continue thru September 2021.

For on-scene communications, mariners are advised to contact the Dredges “TERRAPIN ISLAND”, “NEW YORK”, “TEXAS”, or “CAROLINA” on VHF-FM channels 13 and 16. For more details, please contact Great Lakes Dredge and Dock at (561) 758-2872.
