These closures are to accommodate the heavy road traffic related to a golf tournament on Kiawah Island south of Charleston. With a closed vertical clearance of 33ft, the Wappoo Bridge crosses the Waterway south of the Charleston Harbor. A phone call today confirmed that vessels not requiring an opening may pass under the bridge at any time.

CUT) BRIDGE: Temporary Deviation
The Coast Guard has authorized the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to temporarily deviate from drawbridge operation regulation 33 CFR 117.911(d) that governs the SR 171/700 (Wappoo Cut) Bridge across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Wappoo Creek), mile 470.8 at Charleston, South Carolina.
Under this temporary deviation, the SR 171/700 (Wappoo Cut) Bridge is allowed to remain closed to navigation including tugs and tugs with tows, from 6:00 a.m. to 9:29 a.m. and 3:31 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd, 2019 to facilitate the US Golf Association Event. From 0930 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. these dates, the draw shall open once an hour, on the half hour. Public vessels of the United States and vessels in distress shall be passed at any time.
