      This south to north dredging project beginning at Ashepoo-Coosaw Cutoff and focusing on “hot spot” shoals in the South Carolina waterway is certainly welcome news. Does anyone know any information about dredging going further north? Into the Horry County and Socastee area of the ICW?

        In reading this weeks Notice to Mariners, I saw that the USCG has announced Goodloe Marine will commence dredging operations in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway near St. Helena Sound, South Carolina (mile marker 518) on or about February 1, 2018. Dredging will continue north working on 7 different shoals within the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, ending near Johns Island, South Carolina (mile marker 480). Work will be conducted 24/7 and is anticipated to be completed by September 2018. During dredge operations, mariners should be aware that dredge pipeline and work boats may be working within the channel. Mariners should use caution while transiting the area. For on-scene communications, mariners are advised to caution when transiting the area.
        Although the specific trouble spots have not been publicly identified it is likely tht this dredging will address shoaling at the following ICW trouble spots ;

        1. Ashepoo Coosaw Cut Off StM 511 to 518,

        2. Fenwick Cut, Watts Cut StM 501 to 504,

        3. Dawho Creek StM 499

        4. Church Flats StM 485.

        When you come upon a dredge you will see black shapes displayed in the rigging. You are to pass the dredge on the side with the diamonds. The Black Balls are no go! Diamonds are your friend.
        Cheers,
        Tom
