Elizabeth River – Gilmerton Bridge Temporary Closure – NOW COMPLETE
Mariners are advised that the Gilmerton Bridge (Route 13) highway vertical-lift bridge across the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, mile 5.80, at Chesapeake, VA, will be maintained in the closed-to-navigation position on Thursday, December 31st from approximately 12:00 pm noon until 6:00 pm, unless work completes early.
This closure is required to complete urgent repairs on the bridge after last week’s electrical casualty.
During the repairs, all marine navigation lighting on the bridge will be extinguished. As a result, vessels able to transit safely under the bridge with its charted vertical clearance of 36 ft may do so but only during daylight hours with good visibility. During all other periods all vessel transits are restricted unless granted permission from the USCG Captain of the Port. The end of the closure period will be announced by VHF broadcast.
The bridge will not be able to open for emergencies and there is no immediate alternative route for vessels unable to pass through the bridge in the closed position.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact United States Coast Guard Sector Virginia Waterways Management Division duty officer at (757) 374-3408 or VirginiaWaterways@uscg.mil.
