[EXPIRED] November Programs at Dismal Swamp State Park, Dismal Swamp Canal, AICW Alternate Route
The Dismal Swamp Canal had been closed to navigation since Hurricanes Matthew and Irma and its recent restricted re-opening is welcome news to cruisers. Docks and information are provided at the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center, an NC DOT Rest Area facility, and are located adjacent to the Dismal Swamp State Park, offering trails, exhibits and ongoing programs in Camden County, NC.
Good afternoon!
Here are our upcoming programs for November. See you in the park!
Saturday, November 11
LET’S TALK TURKEY will be an indoor talk lasting about 30 minutes on all things wild turkey. Turkey, after all, is the bird of the season. Find out why they are so fascinating, and then meet a live domestic tom turkey named Handsome. Please pre-register by calling the office to help us plan.
AUDITORIUM/2 PM
Saturday, November 18
WAGON RIDE TO CORAPEAKE will take you deep into the heart of the Swamp! Ride the open-air Dismal Swamp Express all the way out to the park’s western boundary and the site of the 2011 wildfire. Learn about fire ecology, and see a part of the Swamp that many never see. Eagles, otters, and wintering ducks frequent this area. Trip will last approximately 3 hours, so blankets and pillows are recommended. LIMITED TO 20 SEATS, so you MUST call the office to pre-register and reserve your place!
VISITOR CENTER/10 AM
Every Sunday, thru November 19
WAGON RIDES continue on Sundays but will wrap up for the fall on November 19. Enjoy the fall leaves on this approximately one-hour, 2-mile narrated ride along Canal Road in the open-air Dismal Swamp Express. Rides are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
VISITOR CENTER/11 AM & 2 PM
Wednesday, November 22 – Sunday, November 26
TAKE-HOME TURKEYS is a drop-in craft activity. Supplies to make a pine-cone turkey to adorn your holiday table will be set up in the lobby for you to make with your children (or for yourself!) at your leisure. Then take a hike and search for some live wild turkeys!
