Our thanks to Donna Stewart for this report on conditions in the Dismal Swamp Canal.
A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center is located on the east shore of the Canal at Statute Mile 28.
I have had several calls and wanted to pass on this information.
We had a lot of rain here and the Dismal Swamp Canal locks have not operated for the past two days. The water is spilling over the lock gates, per our South Mills Lockmasters. They have opened the spillways at both ends of the canal to remove water as fast as possible. They hoped we would be operational today, but this too, did not occur.
I will check with the ACOE first think tomorrow to see the status of the locks operating at a revised or normal schedule. Many of our rural local roads are flooded.
The Dismal Swamp State Park has also been closed, due to high water and the inability to lower and close the bridge for pedestrian traffic.
