    • [EXPIRED]The Latest on Dismal Swamp Canal, AICW Alternate Route, 11/14/2016

Set in beautiful Camden Count, NC, the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center provides free dockage for cruisers' on the Dismal Swamp AICW Alternate Route

Our thanks to Donna Stewart, Director at the Dismal Swamp Welcome Center, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, for this report and photos. The canal may be closed to navigation, but the State Park is continuing to offer programs as weather permits. The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center is located on the east shore of the Canal at Statute Mile 28.

      Update: 11/14
The Canal remains closed to navigation. The Lake Drummond Reservation also remains closed. I am told plans to perform a formal survey of the water depths, locate and define shoaling is on tap for this week. There are currently barricades located at the Ballahack Boat Ramp to prevent entrance to the Canal by small boat.
We miss all of our boaters. This boat was the last one to leave us and the water line is defined in the colors of how high the water rose. The photo was taken on Oct. 22nd.

The Dismal Swamp Canal continues to be closed due to extensive damage from Hurricane Matthew. Numerous trees went down from high winds and 25” of rainfall from Sept. 21-TS Julia through Oct. 8th, Hurricane Matthew. The ACOE continues to remove trees and assess the shoaling near the mouth of the Feeder Ditch. I had heard a count of #60 trees down initially, but the total is probably much higher now. This process is still ongoing, with no known date of completion.
We have been told the ACOE has requested Federal Funds to assist with the operations to restore the Canal for operations. Flooding occurred in many communities, affecting homes, churches, cars, etc. in the village of South Mills and Deep Creek, as well as many neighboring communities in our region and state. It is my personal hope, the ACOE and local community agencies can work with FEMA and any other resources, to assure flooding like this does not occur again in the future. We would welcome substantial review of the Canal, Lake Drummond, Flood Plain Management, etc. to benefit all involved. If dredging accomplished two benefits, improved water storage and better navigation, we would all be winners.
We will keep you posted of any new updates. Thanks for sharing.
      Donna
