Gulfport Municipal Marina, A CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, and the City of Gulfport always have a full calendar of events from a number of organizations such as the Gulfport Historical Society. The marina and harbor, found on the northern shores of Boca Ciega Bay, are easily accessible from the Western Florida ICW, just north of Tampa Bay.

 

The Mullet Wrapper All you need to know to get caught up with this month’s events. Bob Bates created an exhibit for Gulfport Elementary School — thanks to Susan Ray for setting the wheels in motion for this — and we installed it last month. When Bob started pulling photos, he noticed one thing: All the photos GHS has of Gulfport Elementary students are photos of white students, which is no longer the case at GES. GHS reached out to historians across the state as well as several educators across the country. The consensus was not to ignore this, but to keep it simple enough not to lose the kids. Bob created a timeline using information from the Department of Education, and then created a panel that asked the students what they saw different in the photos.  Before we installed this in the school office, we met with the principal, and as soon as we pulled out the photos — before we said anything — he remarked on the lack of diversity. He approved the exhibit enthusiastically and emailed GHS last week to thank us again.    Exhibits like these further the idea that our entire city, not only one building, is a museum. NOVEMBER EVENTS Nov. 9: 6 p.m. — Board games night Looking for something fun — and free — to do on a Friday night? Join GHS for a board game night — free for everyone. Dogs and kids welcome, and we have plenty of games. We also have a puzzle of the city, currently in progress. Nov. 12: 3 p.m. — Volunteer info session and thank-you BBQ Current volunteers can enjoy a cookout as a “thank you” for the work they’ve done keeping Gulfport history alive. Interested in volunteering for the Gulfport Historical Society? Come learn more about what volunteering entails. The Society needs all sorts of volunteers, from people to take on work-at-home projects to museum volunteers who can take a shift once a month (or more). The board will also update volunteers on current projects, offer refresher training and talk about upcoming opportunities. Casual event; volunteers may bring a guest.  Nov. 14: 10:30 a.m. — Welcome to the Neighborhood info session  GHS secretary Susan Ray will represent the Society as this informational session that tells welcomes Gulfportians to our community. Nov. 14: 7 p.m. — GHS Board meeting Open to all; members in good standing may speak on each item after the board has closed its own discussion on said item. Non-members may speak during the public comment session at the start of the meeting. Nov. 16: 6 p.m. — Welcome to the Neighborhood info session  GHS president Cathy Salustri will represent the Society as this informational session that tells welcomes Gulfportians to our community. Nov. 17: 6:30 p.m. doors — Porch Party — Growing Up Floridian with Michael Taylor Gulfport writer Michael Taylor — his wife, Lynn, writes for The Gabber — will speak about his book, Growing Up Floridian. Come meet Michael and get a copy of his book. Nov. 18: 3 p.m. — #BecauseGulfport walking tour Co-hosted by St. Petersburg Preservation and led by Cathy Salustri. This tour free for GHS and SPP members; everyone else pays $10 for this fun romp through history. If you haven’t been on the tour, please do so!
