[EXPIRED]Update on Dismal Swamp Canal, AICW Alternate Route, 10/28/2016
As of 10/28 the Canal and its Locks are closed until further notice with no opening date predicted. The canal’s closure is especially sad this time of year when the colors along the canal are their most beautiful. Our thanks to Donna Stewart and Sarah Hill, Directors at the Dismal Swamp Welcome Center, A SALTY SOUTHEAST CRUISERS’ NET SPONSOR, for these reports and videos.
The latest update from the ACOE is the Elizabeth and crew are hard at work and sometimes finding multiple trees under an initial one. Sarah Hill, our Assistant Director found this ACOE video today on Twitter and we share it with you. We are also aware of shoaling at the mouth of the Feeder Ditch, which had begun from the release of water from the Lake Drummond Reservation during TS Julia. This accumulation has worsened since Matthew and is being evaluated to determine the best course of action toward resolution.

We are fielding numerous calls each day and are so sad we are not greeting our boaters, face to face, and to date still have no idea if we will open before the end of the fall migration. The Deep Creek lock is scheduled to have their River Gate pulled and refurbished in January. This process is done about every 15 years and is scheduled maintenance. The South Mills River Gate got a facelift in the winter of 2012 (see attached photo).
We will update you as we have more information.
