Coast Guard seeks comment from public for Miami Grand Prix of the Sea

MIAMI — The Coast Guard seeks public comment on rulemaking for the Miami Grand Prix of the Sea on or before April 2.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced public comment opened on March 2, which was published in the Federal Register of a Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) to establish a special, local regulation for certain navigable waters of Biscayne Bay in connection with the Miami Grand Prix of the Sea.

In addition, the Coast Guard will conduct an environmental analysis and review to comply with National Environmental Policy Act and other laws.

The NPRM seeks to establish two regulated areas, a safety zone and a no-anchoring zone, within certain waters of Biscayne Bay and Miami Marine Stadium basin. The safety zones would ensure the safety of vessels and natural environment before, during and after the scheduled event. The marine event permit is still under consideration.

The event is scheduled April 21 through April 22, from 8 a.m. to 5p.m., and consist of offshore-style powerboats and personal watercrafts, which will race inside the Miami Marine Stadium basin.

Approximately 90 participants are scheduled to race in this event.
