[EXPIRED] April Programs at Dismal Swamp State Park, AICW Alternate Canal Route
Hello!
April is nearly upon us, and it is shaping up to be a busy month! Here are the public programs we have coming up:
Statewide Star Party in the Swamp
Fri, 04/12/2019 – 6:00pm to 9:30pm
Join us for a Star Party in the Swamp! We’ll ride the wagon through a scale model of the solar system en route to our observation site in the middle of the Swamp. This year, we are excited to announce that the Back Bay Amateur Astronomers will be out to support our event and provide additional equipment and viewing expertise! Rain date Sat April 13, same time- if sky conditions/rain are unfavorable both nights, we will consider an indoor, daytime program on Sunday (no wagon trip).
*Reservations are REQUIRED due to limited seats on the wagon!*
Wagon Ride to S Martha Washington
Sat, 04/13/2019 – 11:00am to 1:30pm
Take a tour of the Swamp on the open-air Dismal Swamp Express wagon. This ride will travel all the way out to the park’s largest water control structures. Learn about Swamp hydrology and other conservation projects. You can look for wildlife along the way. We recommend bringing blankets and pillows for comfort (benches are wooden) and water/snacks/insect repellent if desired. Binoculars are also recommended, and some will be available for loan. Ride will last 2-3 hours. Call the office to sign up!
*You must reserve your seat in advance to attend!*
Bike to the Burn
Saturday, April 20, 2019 – 10:00am
Join Ranger Joe for a ride that will take you along almost every trail in the park! The highlight will be the midpoint of the ride, where you’ll see the aftermath of the 2011 wildfire and how the Swamp has regenerated in the 8 years since the fire was put out. Bring your own or borrow one of ours.
Length and Difficulty:
About 16 miles, moderately difficult
Spring Wagon Ride
Every Sun, 04/07, 04/14, 04/21, and 04/28 – 11:00am or 2:00pm
Hop aboard the Dismal Swamp Express, an open-air wagon, for a narrated ride along Canal Road. See the park’s liquor still and lighter boat replicas and maybe even some interesting snakes, birds, or other wildlife! The ride lasts 45 minutes to an hour and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. If the weather is questionable or you have a large group, please call the office at 252-771-6593 in advance. Insect repellent is recommended. Bring snacks and water if you want them.
See you in the park!
