NOAA, the state of Maryland, and Charles County announced the designation of a new national marine sanctuary to protect the remains of more than 100 abandoned steamships and vessels built as part of America’s engagement in World War I. Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary, about 40 miles south of Washington, D.C., is the first national marine sanctuary designated since 2000.

      Staff Changes at Gray’s Reef

There has been a strategic realignment of priorities at NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, and as a result, Jody Patterson is no longer with us at Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary. We appreciate Jody’s good work and your dedicated volunteer service, and we look forward to your continued engagement. Temporarily, our Acting Superintendent, Marybeth Head, will be the point person for volunteer activities, requests, and questions. Please feel free to reach out to Marybeth at (912) 598-2432 or email her at marybeth.head@noaa.gov.
